Race 1

Confidence:

WESTERN SONADOR (12) is my top pick and I believe him to be the most promising horse in this race. He is first-up and he’s drawn out the back, so there are factors that plant some seeds of doubt, so the $2.2 he’s opened feels short enough. If I were 100 per cent confident that he was fully wound up and into his prep, I’d think $2.2 a wonderful price. GAME SET MAJOR (11) is my second pick and produced a good run last weekend behind BULLETPROOF BOY and JAMIESON STEELE. At $7.50, I could entertain a small play on him each-way. Similar story for YOUNG ROOSTER (1), whose $9 and $2.8 opening price for win and place feels acceptable on a one-unit-win-by-three-units-place type basis. HULI NIEN (7) is my fourth pick and wouldn’t shock if he bloused them late.

SUGGESTED BET:

Nothing significant

Race 2

Confidence:

I am confident the gap between SOMEWHERE SECRET (8) and STAR OF MEMPHIS (10) is not as wide as the opening TAB price would suggest. They have opened SOMEWHERE SECRET $2.5 and STAR OF MEMPHIS $5. I’m tipping STAR OF MEMPHIS on top and the $5 is value. SOMEWHERE SECRET will be thereabouts late but needs to be on his bike earlier than last weekend to get into the fight. AMPLE POWER opened $5 and sure, if he were fit, that’d be fair enough. But he’s first-up since March 2019 so I won’t be parting with any shekels on him. BOPPER JET (3) is over the odds at $18 if you were looking for a flyer.

SUGGESTED BET

$20 X $30 STAR OF MEMPHIS at $5+ for the win and $1.8 for the place or more

Race 3

Confidence:

This feels like a trifecta race. SWISS MISS (7) is the class, sprinting past ALWAYS READY recently and scoring a powerful win at Ballarat when first-up in Oz three starts back. If she can work to the front, she’ll take a ton of running down. IONA SPIDER (3) and ALDEBARAN CRESCENT (6) both have claims on getting to the pegs first then taking cover behind SWISS MISS. I think ALDEBARAN CRESCENT can, if she rips off the arm as well as she can, find that coveted spot. YMBRO WASTED (8) is the lone runner on the back row and is second pick behind SWISS MISS for mine. From the abovementioned trio, things start to open wider. SCRUFFY DOOLAN (1) lacks gate speed so is likely to get buried away, but has claims on top-four berth, and the same for IONA SPIDER (3) whose chances improve drastically if finds the back of the leader. So here are the plays…

SUGGESTED BET: TRIFECTAS ($40 worth)

7 / 8 / 6                $21 for 2100%

7 / 8 / 1,3             $12 for 600%

7 / 6 / 8                $4 for 400%

8 / 7 / 1,3,6          $3 for 100%

Race 4

Confidence:

GO DANCING (1) and VIVA LA ROCK (8) are the two here. Both drawn the pegs, I’m envisaging a leader/behind leader quinella. BONDI LOCKDOWN (3) has talent but manners the issue at this stage of his career, while ANAHITA (5) and CAPTAIN BELLASARIO (6) both have ability but will have to produce huge efforts from off the pegs. I’m tipping VIVA LA ROCK ($2.8) to beat GO DANCING ($2.2).

SUGGESTED BET: TRIFECTAS ($50 worth)

1,8 / 1,8 / 3,6       $46 for 1150%

1,8 / 1,8 / 2          $4 for 200%

Race 5

Confidence:

Here I thought I was being bold in tipping IM ANOTHERMASTERPIECE (5) and hoping for an each-way price. He opened favourite! CULTURE KING (6) is my second pick, and I thought he’d be much shorter than the $4.2 he opened (he’s into $3.9 at the time of writing this on Thursday night). DIAMONDS N CASH (1) is my third pick and I thought perhaps he’d be a backable each-way price, but at $3.8 he also came up shorter than I’d predicted. My fourth pick, SIRLETIC (12), might be the best ‘overs’ in the race at $13. His form around WOLF STRIDE, RIDE HIGH and LOCHINVAR ART has him well placed if he gets a cart into the race at the right time. MAJESTIC CRUISER (2) is the other to include in trifectas and first-fours because his last two runs have had ‘black book me’ written all over them. He’s flying – he just doesn’t map so well here.

SUGGESTED BET: Nothing significant.

Race 6

Confidence:

Backing up again on JAMIESON STEELE (10), who very nearly landed a nice result for us last week only to be run down by a 60-1 shot. He’ll be better for that run and his recent form is strong enough. He opened $11 here and is still $9.5 at the time of writing. That is big each-way value. My second pick is ROCKNROLL EYES (11), who drops in class here. If he gets around into the action at the right time early, he’ll be kicking on strong late and at $21 and $4.4 is also worth a play. I have MR BOHANNON (5) in for third. I’ve really liked what this fella has been able to do in three unbeaten runs for Andy Gath. He’s a striking type who covers the ground easily. CHANGE THE PRINT (1) is drawn to be in the action whether he leads or sits behind the leader.

SUGGESTED BETS

$25 EACH-WAY JAMIESON STEELE @ $6.5 +

$10 EACH-WAY ROCKNROLL EYES @ $11 +

Race 7

Confidence:

MAJESTUOSO deserves to be the favourite. That I don’t doubt. But I couldn’t come into the $2 available at the minute, that’s for sure. Rather, I have settled on the high-class stablemate in MCLOVIN (10), who at $14 the win represents juicy each-way value. He’s suited to the trip, the standing start conditions and hasn’t been suited to back-row draws of late in what is a very even top-level of fast-class trotters. I have MAJESTUOSO as second pick, just ahead of RED HOT TOOTH (12). Here’s one for long-shot punters – my fourth pick is CRUISIN AROUND (2) who is currently $61. If he can step as well as we know he can, and he finds himself behind the leader, then why can’t this stand-start specialist figure? At his past two standing-start runs he’s finished second to MAGICOOL and won a Kilmore Trotting Cup over two miles. He must be more than a fluker’s hope at big odds.

SUGGESTED BETS:

$10 EACH-WAY MCLOVIN if $12+

$2 WIN X $8 PLACE CRUISIN AROUND if $41+

TRIFECTAS

Roving banker 10 with 2,6,7,12,13                $27 for 45%

Roving banker 2 with 6,7,10,12,13                $3 for 5%

Race 8

Confidence:

OUT TO PLAY (7) is the class act but you’re getting deep tomato sauce odds for a horse who will most likely have to ride off the pegs. ARDEN VOYAGER (4) can lead here and give a sight, while BETTOR BE THE BOMB (1) is fast up the lane and depending on the speed right in front of him, can either podium or, if things get silly in the run, cause a boilover.

SUGGESTED BET: TRIFECTA ($40)

7 / 1,4 / 1,4       $34 for 1700%

1,4 / 7 / 1,4        $4 for 200%

1,4 / 1,4 / 7        $2 for 100%

Race 9

Confidence:

TWO TIMES BETTOR (8) should get every possible chance here to excerpt her authority and class being the lone runner on the back row, with ENCHANTED STRIDE (7) drawn out in the bleachers. SIX ELEMENTS (6) is my third pick, narrowly ahead of KEAYANG SHADY (1). MILLAH JOY (4) and MADAME ANNIE (5) could both play minor roles here, too, but the race composition isn’t such that I want to cobble together a trifecta. That said the odds-on for TWO TIMES BETTOR isn’t appealing either, so it’s a please yourself race.

SUGGESTED BET: Nothing significant

Race 10

Confidence:

A fun way to end the night with the proven performer on the big stage JILLIBY NITRO (5) up against the rising star who has looked crazy good at his last couple of outings, CANT TOP THIS (2). CANT TOP THIS potentially maps better, but JILLIBY NITRO has the benefit of having on the cream through the Breeders Crown and performed admirably to finish runner-up in the final. Interest in the minors sits between YIANNI (4) and KEAYANG JACKIE (1) largely, but I also quite like both SILENT MAJOR (3) and MAJOR JODI (6) as racehorses. So, given I have mentioned every single runner, I’d say it’s a tricky assignment to finish the night.

SUGGESTED BET: Nothing significant

Early Quaddie

Things that can hinder us:

* AMPLE POWER being more forward than I’m giving him credit for in Race 2 (leaving him out)

* SWISS MISS getting rolled in the third leg (playing her one-out)

* MAJOR DELICO producing a minor upset in leg one (I’m leaving him out)

Things that can help us:

* Tennis references… if GAME SET MAJOR wins the first and SWISS MISS lands the third, it’s advantage us!

* STAR OF MEMPHIS being king of the claimer… thank you very much…

11,12 / 8,10 / 7 / 1,8                        $56 for 700%

1,7 / 8,10 / 7 / 1,8                            $16 for 200%

I’ve tipped JAMIESON STEELE and ROCKNROLL EYES to quinella the second leg and both are good odds, so if we can secure a result there, and snag a MCLOVIN in the Group 1, we’ll be positioned nicely. We’re playing a main quad, a saver, and a flyer (with CRUISIN AROUND one-out at $61 in the feature for a small outlay). Good luck.

1,5,6,12 / 1,5,10,11 / 6,7,10,12,13 / 7           $88 for 110%
