Tell us a bit about your background

I managed to finally get a horse when I was 11, growing up in Tasmania. She promptly broke my father’s hip so I’m not entirely sure she was the best “first horse” purchase ever made.

I’ve always ridden and returned to it after a “normal career” in the music and arts industry.
I’ve been a riding coach for the past 15 years or so, working largely with nervous riders and women returning to riding. Recently I’ve become an accredited Bit Fitter and I’m enjoying juggling that with coaching and my HERO’s.

What is your favourite thing about the Standardbred breed?

What’s not to love?! I’ve fallen head over heels in love with this breed of horse. They’re tough, sensible, keen to please, easy keepers and super fun to have around.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

I love teaching these horses a new job. They’ve the most incredible work ethic and genuinely enjoy learning a new thing. You give them a pat when they’ve been good and you feel them saying “look at how good I am!”. I also enjoy matching these horses to their new riders. The only way I can let them go to new homes is to demand regular updates! It makes my day to receive messages with new owners telling me how much they love their new horse.

What do you enjoy outside of your regular work?

I still enjoy visiting my contacts in the arts world by going to opera and music theatre productions. I’m also something of a crafter with way too many hand-pieced patchwork and embroidery projects on the go.
