It's hard to look through Lochinvar Art's form and not ponder what might have been.

While he is a Group 1 Bathurst Gold Chalice winner, the Laura Crossland-trained pacer has run placings in five other races at the elite level.

These include headline features for young horses such as the Victoria Derby and NSW Derby and more recently the NSW Breeders Challenge (3YO colts and geldings) and Queensland Derby.

"He's won nearly $300,000 and whatever he has won, if he had have had any luck, he probably could have doubled it," Crossland said with a laugh.

"Draws have been the biggest thing over the time. He could have probably won two more (Group 1s) by now.

"I thought he was super in the Vic Derby. He was about 88 wide on the turn and in the Breeders Challenge, he just had no luck at all. He was sideways up the straight and flashed home late."

Crossland said Lochinvar Art's most recent effort when runner-up to Self Assured in the Queensland Derby was a "career best".

"He probably wasn't entitled to keep going after over-racing like that and having a little look for the front and doing that work," she said.

"I thought at the 400m if he dropped out, he'd still probably gone good. But to fight on like that having Our Princess Tiffany on his back, I was so proud of him."

Crossland is plotting one last crack at a major Group 1 this season with her powerful son of Modern Art, which will tackle the heats of the IRT Breeders Crown Series for three-year-old colts and geldings in Ballarat on Friday night.

In what looks a two-horse match race, Crossland's charge must lock horns with Emma Stewart's classy colt Hurricane Harley.

"He's really good. He's thrived since he's been up (in Queensland)," Crossland, who is based in Kialla, said.

"Him being him, he'll still need this run because he goes better week in, week out. So whatever he does, he will be better for the semis, but he is pretty good.

"I know Hurricane Harley is a good horse and I know we sat outside him once and couldn't beat him, but I think he has sort of gone on since then, our bloke. I'm pretty confident with him.

"He will be best by the final because he does love racing week in, week out."

While many of the country's big races are on the agenda when Lochinvar Art becomes a four-year-old next season, the horse's ability to perform best when racing consistently has Crossland considering an Inter Dominion campaign.

"I know it sounds funny because he is only young, but a horse like him would thrive through an Inter Dominion series," she said.

Ballarat's Bray Raceway will host three heats of the IRT Breeders Crown Series for three-year-old colts and geldings on Friday night.

They are scheduled as the first three legs of the quaddie, with the first to start at 8.05pm.
