Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence - and a touch of excitement - to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 1720m Logical Staffing Solutions FFA
1/1 Sahara Breeze – Chris Alford/Gary & Debbie Quinlan
Sahara Breeze is a consistent, classy mare who rarely runs a bad race – whether it's mares’ grade or open class. Draws well, has early speed, and will look to take cover most likely on smart Oliver Dan. They will fight it out – slight lean Sahara Breeze.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $3.50
Race 2 – 1720m IRT Pace
2/12 Silver Pistol – Kate Gath/Emma Stewart
The back row trio hold the key, and Silver Pistol earns a slight edge based on their last clash. He was the strongest of the three in previous clashes and despite a tougher draw, remains the one to beat with even luck.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.60
Race 3 – 2240m Beraldo Coffee Pace
3/6 Neatntidy – Aaron Dunn/Aaron Dunn
Neatntidy hasn’t had much luck with barrier draws of late. In fact, you have to go back four starts to find a favourable gate, on that occasion, he led and was only beaten by a head in a field of similar quality. This distance suits, and with Aaron Dunn aboard, who boasts an excellent strike rate, he looks a genuine contender.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.10
Race 4 – 2240m Garrards Horse & Hound Trot
4/7 Hoppy – Matthew Craven / Matthew Craven
Hoppy finally got reward for effort last start with a strong win from the tapes. This is a bit trickier under mobile conditions, but his honesty and form are hard to knock. Maps awkwardly but still a leading player.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $2.50
Race 5 – 2240m Nevele R Stud Trot
5/1 Imperial Command – Kate Gath/Andy Gath
Imperial Command has made quick progression through the grades and now looks ready to measure up at this level. Has early speed to lead and control proceedings, which makes him the one to beat.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $1.50
Race 6 – 1720m CNC Router Bits Pace
6/7 Some American – Ryan Sanderson/Emma Stewart
This is a high-quality field for this grade and Some American presents as the runner of interest considering he’s aiming up at a berth in the rich Eureka in September. Has the gate speed to overcome the draw and find a prominent spot. Needs to bounce back from a plain run last start but clearly capable.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $2.00
Race 7 – 1720m Prydes Easifeed Trot
7/7 Jilliby Ballerini – Glen Craven/Marg & Paddy Lee
Made it five on the trot last start despite breaking at the start - has since trialled well and returns to a circuit and trip where she thrives. I respect Violet Stanford but with fitness on Ballerini’s side she can extend the picket fence.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $2.50
Race 8 – 2240m Western Syrups Pace
8/6 Humour Me – Ryan Sanderson/Emma Stewart
Humour Me is a highly promising type who won easily on debut when sent out a hot favourite. This is tougher against older, more seasoned rivals, but from a top yard and with natural progression, she’s the one they must beat.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.90
