Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence - and a touch of excitement - to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 1720m Logical Staffing Solutions Pace
1/2 Jilliby Nitro – Jason Lee/Marg & Paddy Lee
Jilliby Nitro is racing far better than his form line suggests, with recent efforts hampered by poor draws and awkward scenarios. Finally gets a favourable gate to push forward early either to the front or secure soft cover. Hit the line well last week and should be in the mix, though this is a hot contest to start off.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $2.40
Race 2 – 2240m Lifestyle Communities Woodlea Pace
2/4 Kwik Sand – Kerryn Manning/Ashley & Beau Tindale
Kwik Sand has been ultra-consistent of late and finds a very suitable race here at headquarters. Looks likely to find the top and control the tempo, with his main threats drawn awkwardly. Clearly the one to beat – best of the night.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.70
Race 3 – 1720m Hygain Victory Pace
3/1 Clymenus – Ellen Tormey/Julie Douglas
Clymenus is a sit-sprinter who thrives on one late burst, so the pole draw suits perfectly. Early speed around him adds uncertainty to the map, but even if he ends up behind the leader or three pegs, he profiles as a reliable place option.
Confidence: High Rated Place Price: $1.30
Race 4 – 1720m Garrards Horse And Hound 2yo Trot
4/6 Jays All That – Jodi Quinlan/Tyrone Abela
Jays All That brings race smarts from two tidy starts, including a last start win despite racing greenly late. Trained by trotting specialist Tyrone Abela, which is a big tick in a race with many unknowns.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $1.60
Race 5 – 2240m Lamaros Hotel Pace
5/1 Seathestars – Jordan Leedham/Geoff Webster
Seathestars steps up from 3YO grade but has shown real upside this season. Has the gate speed to either lead or take a trail. Faces seasoned rivals but shouldn’t be underestimated.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $1.20
Race 6 – 1720m Hertz Melton Trot
6/8 Ubetcha Tigerpie – Michael Stanley/Michael Stanley
Ubetcha Tigerpie broke at the start last time in a rare lapse but is better than that. The sole runner off the back row but has the toughness to overcome it. Can loop into the race cheaply if the tempo drops. Ex-FFA performer, so well placed here.
Confidence: High Rated Place Price: $1.30
Race 7 – 1720m Benstud Standardbreds Pace
7/8 Watts Up Partytime – Kate Gath/Andy Gath
Watts Up Partytime is the defending Great Southern Star champ who’s extremely well graded here over the sprint trip. Beat stronger opposition last week and if he stays trotting, he should simply win.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.70
Race 8 – 2240m Prydes Easifeed 3yo NMW Trot
8/2 Jilliby Ballerini – Jason Lee/Marg & Paddy Lee
Jilliby Ballerini is a talented 4YO mare who competed at the elite level last campaign and resumed in explosive fashion at Geelong. Could face early pressure for the front, but her class should take her a long way.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.60
Race 9 – 2240m Aldebaran Park Trotters Free For All
9/7 Im Ready Jet – Kate Gath/Andy Gath
Im Ready Jet is quite simply one of the best-graded horses you'll ever see. An eight-time Group 1 winner and fifth on the all-time Aussie list. Yes, she was beaten home by Aldebaran Acrux in the Macarthur Mile, but that was map driven. Expect her to be handed the lead here without fuss. Anything over $1.25 is a gift.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.15
