Long-time harness racing enthusiast Des McQueen passed away aged 94 on Friday, July 4.
Des bred and raced numerous horses over the years, including a Safely Kept-Ensign’s Dream gelding by the name of The Accurate One between 2000 and 2006.
The horse won several races when trained by the Noel Alexander and Jayne Davies combination, and later Ronnie Francis at Woodstock.
He also raced a number of “Tibur” horses, such as Tibur Prince and Tibur Power.
Des was heavily involved in harness racing administration, including being secretary of the Victorian Studmasters and Breeders Association for a long period of time.
He was a regular at both The Showgrounds and Moonee Valley when the sport was at its peak, and was also an avid follower of the gallops.
He was president of the Diamond Valley Football Club at one stage and was also a strong supporter of the Masonic Lodge.
Harness Racing Victoria extends its sincere sympathy to Des’s family and friends.
His funeral is to be held at the Heidelberg Golf Club (8 Main Road, Lower Plenty) on Tuesday, July 15 at 11am.
