When brothers Terry and David Lewis bought the broodmare Brilliant Disguise in 2002, it was to be the start of a breeding dynasty spanning three generations that has produced one of ‘finds’ of the Victorian season, Isthisjustfantasy.
The Betting Line four-year-old extended her season’s record to six wins and a placing from nine starts when she came from near last with a booming finishing burst to salute at Melton last Saturday.
“She’s highly strung but she’s got high speed and is getting better all the time,” Terry Lewis, her breeder and part-owner, said.
“We will now earmark some of the better mare’s races with her.”
The Isthisjustfantasy story actually begun when the Lewis brothers sought to buy a filly in Queensland called Whodoyathinkiam 20 years ago.
“We got Trevor Patching who was living in Queensland at the time to drive her and he suggested that we should buy her,” Terry said.
“However, the owner told us that John Yeomans had the first option on her and subsequently bought the filly.
“Then a couple of years later Peter Beaumont was getting out of the sport and had two mares left for sale. Incredibly, one of them was Brilliant Disguise, who was the mother of Whodoyathinkiam.
“David and I made the long trek to Beaumont’s property at Clyde to inspect the mare and we were really disappointed. She was little and only had one eye.
“She was in foal to Soky’s Atom, so we decided that as we’d come all this way that we would buy her.”
The foal she was carrying was the smart performer Master Of Disguise. He won 27 races and $212,825 and competed in the 2009 Inter Dominion series at the Gold Coast.
“She had another foal called Man In Disguise who won eight for us and one in WA,” Terry said.
“The next one was the mare Whodyou Wantmetobe. She had a fair few problems, but was fairly quick. She won seven races but had she had been sound she would have won a lot more.”
Whodyou Wantmetobe’s first issue was Mistressofillusion, a winner of eight and a finalist in the NSW Ladyship Mile.
“David trained her early in her career but as he had a young family we decided to go on a different tack, so we sent Mistressofillusion and Abettorpunt to the Lee’s,” he said.
“Paddy won a couple of races at Melton with ‘Mistress’ and when she finished racing he asked us if he could race her first foal.
“We honoured that and the first foal is Isthisjustfantasy. Then we sent her next foal Browniesatmidnight to him.”
Mistressofillusion has since produced a two-year-old colt by Sweet Lou, a yearling filly by Tall Dark Stranger being broken in by Amy Day and a weanling colt by Downbytheseaside. She is booked to Captaintreacherous this season.
Aldebaran Park principal Duncan McPherson bred four winners in three continents in the space of 24 hours. For Sure Aldebaran won in Sweden, General Speaking (ex Maori Time) scored in 1:55.8 at The Red Mile, Kentucky and Aldebaranstilinski and Hammer Son both won at Albion Park
Alabar Bloodstock stallions dominated the final night of the Queensland Constellations carnival, winning six of the 10 races. Always B Miki sired the winner of the Protostar (Fate Awaits) and the Queensland Oaks (Aardie B Miki), Rock N Roll Heaven was represented by Blazing Home (4YO Championship) and Tay Tay, while Art Major produced the Queensland Derby winner Major Hot and Don Hugo
