Angelique

Angelique was a bay mare pacer foaled in 1958 by Avian Again from the mare Worthy Staveley (NZ).

Bred and owned by Jean Rothacker of Doreen, she was trained and driven throughout her career by Gordon Rothacker.

Angelique started racing as a three-year-old when she won a heat and the final of the 1962 Victoria Oaks at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.

During her career, she contested 138 races for 45 wins and 49 placings. She competed in and won races in Victoria, NSW and SA.

Included in her wins were the Victorian Oaks, the Lady Brooks Cup (twice) and the SA Trotting Cup. She won two heats of the 1964 Inter Dominion and was placed second in the final to Minuteman.

Her placings included a second and third in the 1964 and 1967 Hunter Cups, second to Minuteman in the 1964 Inter Dominion and third in the 1967 Miracle Mile.

Angelique won the prestigious Lady Brookes Cup in both 1965 and 1966.

As a six-year-old she equalled Cardigan Bay’s Showgrounds track record for 14 furlongs from a standing start in the Lady Brooks Cup. Overall she won 29 free-for-alls.

At that time, races for mares were few. Along with Robin Dundee, she raced against champion horses such as Cardigan Bay, Minuteman, Dales Gift and Tactile.

On retirement as a nine-year-old, Angelique was a successful broodmare. Her first foal was Gallagher ($127,236), whose wins included the Bendigo and Ballarat Cups, Bendigo and Kilmore Derbies and Victoria Youthful stakes. Another of her progeny was Archibald (winner of 16 races). A grandson of Angelique, Rhetoric, won 14 races at Moonee Valley and $186,217.
