One of the links to the halcyon days of harness racing in Kilmore was broken when Hazel Logie passed away last week aged 96.
Hazel, who was the sister of legendary trainer Bob Knight and his brother Jack, held an owner trainers licence leading in her first winner with Little Greta who saluted at Wangaratta in 1978.
According to her daughter Gaye, Hazel was an avid breeder who wasn’t deterred by early setbacks.
“For quite a while there were dead foals and things going wrong with mares and we all told her she was crazy, but she persisted,” said Gaye.
Hazel’s determination to breed a good horse was subsequently rewarded in 1984 when she bred the outstanding racemare Jodie’s Babe who defeated stablemate Our Maestro in the 1989 Inter Dominion Grand Final at Gloucester Park.
Hazel’s late husband Don was a tireless volunteer for the Kilmore Harness Racing Club in his roles as club steward and time keeper.
The Logie name today is prominent through the deeds of Hazel’s granddaughter Allanah who combines riding track work with preparing a team of standardbreds along with her partner Corey Bell.
Harness Racing Victoria sends its sincere condolences to the Logie family.
