Former Yarrambat born and bred horseman Wally Marshall, who was well known during the Melbourne Showgrounds era, passed on March 21 at age 94.
Wally schooled at Yarrambat Primary and then Collingwood Tech before becoming a qualified electrician and poultry farmer.
He was a familiar face at the races from the ’60s, either competing or often helping close friend and neighbour Gordon Rothacker.
A founding committee member and later treasurer of the Diamond Valley Trotting Association, Wally and brother Ron (deceased) always had a handy horse around them.
None were better than Golden Wealth (pictured), although Foggys Gift certainly paid his way as did Tanya Wealth and, to a lesser extent, Mineral Wealth. All were home bred.
Wally battled ill health but showed he was clearly made of sturdy stock, overcoming significant illnesses to live a normal life in no small part due to his resilience and strong constitution.
He loved the trots and would be there week after week to witness his favourite sport, as well as watching his beloved football team, Collingwood, on television.
His funeral service and private cremation was held on March 26.
