More Dream prospects as Vicbred yearlings readied for Gold Coast sale

Sunday’s 2024 Gold Coast Australian Pacing Gold sale is replete with yearlings likely to chase Victorian success among a catalogue deep with interstate futurities opportunities.

One of these eye-catching yearlings is lot 81, a bay trotting colt by Southwind Frank out of Swede Dreams. This Janice Bryant-prepared yearling is eligible for Vicbred Platinum, Australian Breeders Crown, QBred and Need For Speed.

The mare Swede Dreams is an import from Sweden, who won 11 races from 36 starts in Australia. Swede Dreams has left two live foals of racing age and has one up-and-coming two-year-old from last year’s Melbourne Nutrien Equine Yearling Sale.

Jess Tubbs purchased this yearling’s older sister by Volstead at last year’s sales for $15,000.

“She trots nicely and she is a lovely mannered filly,” said Greg Sugars, partner of Tubbs.

Of the two other offspring of racing age, both have left their mark at the races. The oldest, Fenomenal, is racing the best trotters in Queensland.

Tamborine trainer Darren McCall loves having Fenomenal as part of his team.

“He’s a lovely type with a great attitude, always willing to please. I’d like to have more horses like him and I’ll be definitely looking at his brother (at the sale),” said McCall.

The other sibling is Aldebaran Freda, who earlier this year won her maiden at Bendigo.

The January-born yearling has impressed his breeder and preparer Janice Bryant, who intentionally targeted him for the Queensland sale.

“The mare (Swede Dreams) did her best racing up here (Queensland), and his brother (Fenomenal) is going ok up here now. So, it’s more a strategic move as it’s a bit better known up here (the family).

“He’s a very bright animal, he’s quite forward, I would say he’s determined. He’s a fast learner.”

This impressive yearling is sired by Southwink Frank, a son of Muscle Hill who was the 2015 USA and Canandian 2YO Trotting Colt of the Year and former world champion juvenile. Although only few seasons into his stud career, Southwink Frank has left a mark. He was the second leading first season sire in North America in 2020 with only 49 foals.

The yearling is only Vicbred Platinum the sale and is therefore eligible for a $9000 first win bonus as a 2YO, 3YO or 4YO in Victoria. He is also eligible to compete in the Vicbred Super Series, Home Grown and Metro Series.

There are a further 14 Vicbred eligible yearlings available in the 2024 Gold Coast Australian Pacing Gold sale, who are eligible for their $8000 first win bonuses as a 2YO, 3YO or 4YO in Victoria or $4500 if they are 5YO+. They are also eligible to compete in the Vicbred Super Series.
