‘I’ve just been so lucky’: Butt reflects on Living Legend honour

Champion reinsman Anthony Butt has reflected on his wonderful career in harness racing the morning after being named a Caduceus Club of Victoria Living Legend.

The Kiwi native joined Adam Hamilton and Gareth Hall for his regular weekly segment on RSN and spoke about the honour bestowed on him at Sunday evening’s Night of Nights function at Crown.

“It was a huge honour, very humbling and I was very proud,” Butt said.

“I’ve had a fantastic career and driven some out and out champions, but when you put it all in one (video) package and look back at it all in a 10-minute segment, it really hits home.

“I’ve just been so lucky in my life.”

Butt struggled to put a finger on what exactly was behind his sustained success in the sulky, but spoke positively about his decision to leave home in New Zealand and head to Australia close to a decade ago.

“I’ve had a great family upbringing and surrounded myself with great people all my life, my grandfather Derek to start off with and then hooking up with (brother) Tim. We had that amazing success there for 15 or 20 years,” he said.

“You’ve got to get lucky, get on the right horses and then when you do, do the job as well.

“About eight years ago now I could just see the writing on the wall in New Zealand a little bit and thought there would be more opportunities in Australia.

“It’s worked out fantastic.”
