Driving Change: Sugars, McGuigan raise $14,500

Greg Sugars’ extraordinary month’s racing and Darby McGuigan’s continual rise have seen $14,500 donated to take the fight to an insidious disease.

Harness Racing Victoria will donate the five-figure sum to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia after Sugars notched 21 wins in September and McGuigan eight, with each victory prompting a $500 donation.

September was Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, drawing attention to the fact 20,000 Australian men will this year be newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, 3500 will die of the disease and more than 200,000 Australian men are living with it every day.

To help raise awareness, Sugars and McGuigan wore promotional Prostate Cancer Awareness Month silks throughout September, while trots fans can further spread the word by heading to PCFA.org.au to download and share the PCFA’s free Awareness Guide. One click is all it takes to learn more about prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia State Manager John Strachan said they were to be partnering with Harness Racing Victoria to raise awareness in metro and regional Victoria.

“Prostate cancer is a significant challenge for Victorian men (one in four cancers diagnosed in men will be prostate cancer) and with HRV’s significant network and community reach it provides an excellent opportunity to raise vital awareness of the disease,” Mr Strachan said.

“PCFA applauds HRV for this fantastic community awareness initiative.”
