While he remains a possible starter in the 2025 Great Southern Star, master trainer Andy Gath says he won’t be rushing star trotter Callmethebreeze back to the races just for the sake of a title defence on February 1.
Gath said the $1.7million earner was currently based at owner Pat Driscoll’s Yabby Dam Farms property in Cardigan, near Ballarat, after being sidelined by a serious quarter crack issue.
He last raced in the Group 1 Bill Collins Trotters Sprint on October 12 when he galloped in the concluding stages to finish last behind champion rival Just Believe.
“It’s still a little bit up in the air when he will be ready,” Gath said. “The Great Southern Star may be an option, it may not.
“He won’t be rushed. Obviously, we’d like to have him ready for the Inter Dominion in Queensland (in July next year).
“It’s one of those things you’ve just got to let heal, otherwise it will just keep deteriorating.”
Callmethebreeze claimed the 2024 Great Southern Star Final for former trainer Anton Golino, and has had four starts since joining the Gath stable for a win in the Kilmore Trotters Cup and free-for-all victories at Melton and Geelong.
