Vale Wayne Hayes

Shepparton area (Gillieston) owner/trainer/driver Wayne Hayes passed away suddenly on July 30 at the age of 66.

Wayne, a teacher by trade, had been involved in harness racing since first being licensed in the 1980/81 season, having had a total of 288 drives for 15 winners, including his most recent with a Courage Under Fire mare by the name of Roam. Raced by Wayne and his long-time partner Andrea Pollock, Roam’s latest victory was at Shepparton in September last year.

Growing up in Yarrambat, Wayne and his dad “Smokey” would often visit the Doreen stables of legendary trainer/driver Gordon Rothacker, and it was through this association that he developed his interest in the sport.

Wayne was a quiet and unassuming person who never sought publicity but would happily engage in a conversation or two when attending the trots. In fact, he requested no funeral on his passing, which was to be completely private.

Harness Racing Victoria extends sincere sympathy to Andrea and the Hayes family.

Harness Racing Victoria Chair Bernard Saundry, on behalf of the industry, extends his sincere condolences to Andrea and the Hayes family and friends.
