Harness Racing Victoria form guru Craig Rail noticed some standout runners at recent trials.
Former New Zealand runner Shudaboughtaboat won comfortably at Maryborough and will step out at Charlton on Monday afternoon.
At Melton, Kyvalley Misty, Timbimboo, On The Wing and McBart also caught Rail’s eye.

Trial 1: – DELTA STARZ has performed consistently during his current preparation having been placed in three of his past four starts including a win at Kilmore. He kept the momentum rolling with a comfortable trial victory over the Ian Hunter prepared HAVEACHAT, which hasn’t raced since December 2023. HER MADGEJESTY hadn’t raced since August before Thursday night but she has had several trials recently and was third across the line. She will have a busy week as she backed up at Kilmore on Thursday night, finishing sixth, and is also engaged to race at Cranbourne on Sunday. LEVI EDISON and PHURPHY were the last pair across the line. The winner DELTA STARZ followed with a fourth placed effort at Kilmore on Thursday night.

Trial 2: – HITTHEROADJACK NZ has only recently returned from a break. He is a handy front running pacer, which has competed at Metropolitan level and was able to record fast time at his trial success in which he scored by a comfortable margin. He backed up with a second placed effort at Kilmore on Thursday night. SCHERGER THAT boasts a consistent record and finished in second at his comeback trial since his latest performance back in August. YNOBE DAKOTA’s last attempt was also back in August and she was third across the line. SPORTY PHILTRA and ISOLATION finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Trial 3: – BRINGSUSJOY has had no luck whatsoever in two starts since competing in both the Super Series and the Breeders Crown so she is racing better than her form reads. She was able to build some confidence with a very comfortable trial victory and followed with a fourth at Kilmore on Thursday night, where she was held up for a run at a vital stage. AMERICAN MICHI is an unraced gelding by Always B Miki for trainer Brendan Said. He finished in second and was comfortably ahead of WEONA OUR RIGHTS with ROCK POSTER being in fourth position.

Trial 4: – MILLY METER is a fast beginner and was placed at Cranbourne on November 16. She won her trial in slow time over DREAMS OF LOVE, which has returned to Victoria after a stint in South Australia with trainer Lance Holberton. She finished in second with SHAQ THE ANVIL being a further ten metres away in third position. The winner MILLY METER is competing at Cranbourne on Sunday night.

Trial 5: – MY JUSTICE was able to take out the last trial in what turned out to be a battle of attrition. He has been unplaced at his past eleven starts but that trial victory would have given him some confidence as he continues his campaign. He is competing at Geelong this evening, where he has drawn favourably. MIDNITE DESIRE is also competing at Geelong and finished in second position with the unraced mare DIAMONTY QUEEN being the third horse across the line. DIAMONTY QUEEN is by Bling It On out of Suzy Albert (1.59.2, $21,806), which has produced five winners including Blitzsuzy (1.57.4, $82,664) and Bonnie Belle (1.54.4, $81,470).

Trial 1: – SHUDABOUGHTABOAT NZ is a New Zealand bred gelding, which won the opening trial comfortably. He settled four back on the markers, moved up without cover at the 900m and asserted his superiority at the end and drew clear. He will be competing at Charlton on Monday afternoon. IMA BALLERINA finished in second after setting up a reasonable tempo. She is racing at Geelong this evening and is also engaged to race at Shepparton on Tuesday night. BARBADOS ROSE finished third after trailing the leader and BONAVISTA BOY (3 back markers) was the last horse across the line.

Trial 2: – EL RESAMO was clearly the class runner of the trial and was untroubled in scoring. He worked to the front and extended nicely in the final 150m of the event. He is travelling up to New South Wales to compete at Menangle on Saturday night. RASTAMON finished in second after trailing the leader throughout and considering his National Rating is 30 points lower than EL RESAMO, it was a bold effort. He is competing at Charlton on Monday afternoon. COBARGO MILLY finished a distant third from three back on the markers and SWEET MAORI MISS broke stride when trying to work around her at the half mile marker.

Trial 2: – SANCHEZ settled three back on the inside, moved off the fence at the 500m and finished off best in slick final sectionals to win the trial. FRANCO NOVELIST NZ was four back on the markers, moved into the one out and one back trail behind SANCHEZ and finished off well for a close second. It was a sharper effort than his previous trial effort and his first up performance so he might be working back into form. He is competing at Shepparton on Saturday night. SEBS CHOICE trailed the leader and used the sprint lane to finish in third position. He is also competing at Shepparton tomorrow night. BELLA DANZA began quickly to set the speed but was run down at the end.

Trial 3: – GOPATI NZ began quickly and was three horses wide early, pushed forward to find the lead then set up an even tempo. He kicked well clear before the home turn and peaked late but was able to hold on. She is competing at Shepparton on Tuesday night. FINAL BOW began quickly to lead out then took cover. She rallied in the final 50m and missed out by a narrow margin. She is meeting a very suitable assignment at Cranbourne on Sunday. OUTA THE BLUE led out then took cover and ended up being three back on the markers. He raced fiercely in the middle stages but was still able to find the line nicely. KIDWITHAGRIN settled five back on the markers, moved to the outside at the 500m and battled on fairly well for fourth. He is competing at Shepparton on Tuesday night.

Trial 4: – HILLSIDE settled sixth on the markers, moved into the running lane (1-2) at the 700m and finished off fast to score nicely. MISSYS INTEREST was four back on the markers, moved into the one out and one back trail in the back straight and came out three horses wide at the 300m. She hit the lead in the straight but was run down by HILLSIDE over the latter stages. THE CHOOK settled three back on the markers, moved into the death seat at the half mile marker and battled on fairly for third. BUCKLE ME UP finished in fourth position after attempting to lead throughout and is backing up at Cranbourne on Sunday.

Trial 6: – TICTOK broke stride at the start and lost approximately 50m. She chased hard and caught up with the leading duo with one round remaining. She still had a good kick left in the home straight and rushed through the middle to score by a narrow margin. BULLAPARK BENO trailed the leader throughout and finished in second. BITTA IRISH LUCK began quickly to find the lead, ran along at an even tempo and was run down over the latter stages. She is backing up at Shepparton on Saturday night.

Trial 1: – KYVALLEY MICHAEL NZ began reasonably from the standing start, trailed the leader early then circled around to find the lead at the 1800m. He held on in the latter stages to score by a narrow margin. KYVALLEY MISTY led out then took cover. She waited until well into the home straight before she used the sprint lane and finished off quickly to go down narrowly. She has performed very nicely at her past two trial attempts. JACK SPRAT was last of the three runners throughout but wasn’t beaten by far and is racing at Shepparton tomorrow night.

Trial 2: – CLAUDYS HERO began quickly to find the lead and was always in a dominant position. He went to the line with plenty in reserve and scored with ease. SPANISH RIZARDO settled three back on the markers and chased hard for second. FRANC was a distant third after settling four back on the markers. TUBBS NOW SLIM began well and ended up trailing the leader. He broke stride at the 600m and lost his chance, ending up finishing a distant fourth.

Trial 3: – The former New Zealand pacer TIMBIMBOO NZ produced an impressive display to win the third event. He began well to race without cover, eased to be three back on the markers from the 1800m and waited for the sprint lane. He finished off fast in a sizzling final quarter of 27.0 seconds to get up on the line. KNIGHT FURY DAN trailed the leader, came to the outside at the 300m and battled on well for second. RAVISHING RUBY NZ recently joined the strong Emma Stewart stable and finished in third after showing good gate speed to lead and being run down over the latter stages. FIRE MARSHALL settled fifth on the markers and came to the outside at the 700m mark. The trotter REMUS PHOENIX settled six back on the markers and battled on well for fifth.

Trial 4: – UNIQUELY IDEAL showed very good gate speed to lead and ran along at a rapid rate. He was still very strong at the finish and won by a large margin. SOHO DARKNSTORMY trailed the leader throughout and battled on fairly well for second. METEOR MOTH settled four back on the markers, came to the outside on the home turn and worked home well without being fully extended, finishing in third. TWISTING BY NZ came from last and did very well for fourth.

Trial 5: – VIVID DREAM NZ settled four back on the markers and finished off best in a slick final quarter of 27.0 seconds to win comfortably. MUFASA BART settled three back on the markers and tried hard for second. MY ULTIMATE LUIGI NZ led out then took cover and obtained an inside run at the 300m. He tried hard for third. EVILEYE began quickly and worked forward to find the lead. She hung out at the 300m and battled on fairly well for fourth over the latter stages.

Trial 6: – B T CAPTIVATE NZ settled three back on the markers, circled around to find the lead at the 1100m but raced very greenly and switched off completely. He took cover at the 600m then waited for the sprint lane and finished off best to win. He is still learning but obviously has ability. TOWERING FORTUNE led out, took cover then circled around to find the lead again in the back straight. He battled on fairly well to finish in second. CAPTAIN HANK NZ was four back on the markers, moved up without cover at the 700m mark and held his own over the latter stages to finish in third. ON THE WING NZ settled in seventh position early, moved off the pegs at the 700m mark and finished off stylishly for an eye-catching fourth. He should go well at his Australian debut at Geelong this evening. MCBART was last of the eight runners early, made ground through the middle, ran into a dead-end at the 100m and contacted a sulky thus breaking stride late. He finished in fifth but showed ability in what appeared to be a strong trial.

Trial 7: – WAR DAN BUDDY settled three back on the inside, moved off the pegs at the 500m and recorded a sizzling final quarter of 26.2 seconds to win the open class trial impressively. TANGO TARA NZ began quickly to find the lead and was run down in the final 100m but performed well enough to run a big race first up at Shepparton on Saturday night. OLIVER DAN finished third after trailing the leader and MIKI TO SUCCESS was last of the four runners for the majority of the trip.

Trial 1: – BENNIE AND THE JETS NZ was stood down to trial after his big third in the Bendigo Trotters Cup, where he made an error and picked up a lot of ground. He won the Cobram Cup prior so he is racing in outstanding form and he continued the trend with a stylish trial victory against the pacers. He settled last of the three runners, came to the outside at the 500m mark and finished off strongly in a slick last half of 56.9 seconds to snare victory on the line. MIGHTY MINNIE is a lightly raced filly by Bettor’s Wish and finished in second after setting the speed. SHEZARAGER is an unraced filly by Raging Bull, which finished last of the three runners but wasn’t beaten by far after trailing the leader throughout.
