Boom colt Verbici rounded out his perfect season in an ideal manner on Sunday afternoon.
Set to be sent for a “very good rest”, Verbici maintained his undefeated record by capturing Maryborough’s famed Redwood Classic for co-trainers Sonia Mahar and Chris Lang.
Verbici’s success in the Group 1 took his tally to nine wins, with his victories including the Nutrien Sales Classic, New South Wales Trot, Vicbred Super Series and Yabby Dam Farms Finals.
“He’s had a long season and has earned a very good rest,” Lang said. “I think Sonia and I have as well!
“He had his first trial in March and has been able to keep going along so well as he is a pleasure to train. He’s not hard on himself or the trainers, which makes it easier for everyone.
“To stay unbeaten while racing in so many big races is testament to his ability and confirmation.
“I’ve been asked before if he is the best two-year-old I have trained, and after today’s win, I can categorically say ‘yes’.”
With Lang holding the reins, Verbici led throughout from six to score by three metres from Regal Gala, with Insulator nine metres away in third.
Covering the last half in a blistering 56.8 seconds, the son of Orlando Vici rated 2:02.5 for the 2190-metre stand.
“I thought he had a favourable draw and we were able to use that to find the lead,” Lang said. “The standing start, especially for two-year-old trotters, can be a bit like Russian roulette, but purists will tell you it’s the ultimate.
“He felt strong all the way and hit the line well even in a quick last half. He’s gone 56.8 and I doubt many two-year-old trotters have run quicker here.”
