Harness Racing Victoria’s (HRV) General Manager – Racing, Stephen Bell, has hailed the significant refurbishment works at Tabcorp Park Melton “a resounding success” as the venue was reopened to racing last week.

Bell highlighted the great work of HRV Manager of Development and Infrastructure Rob Pongho for overseeing the projects, which will significantly improve lighting efficiency and provide the industry-owned venue the opportunity to draw major events such as music concerts to the infield.

“Rob Pongho deserves enormous credit for the way he’s managed these significant works,” Bell said.

“The new LED floodlights are more environmentally friendly, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent, and the upgrade will save over $500,000 in electricity costs over 15 years. The feedback we’ve had has all been positive and the lights look fantastic.

“The space on the infield will be available for a range of activities, including equestrian events, music concerts, festivals, trade shows and other community activities.”

The industry will also benefit from significantly reduced maintenance costs as a result of the project, as the new LED lights last 16 times longer than the previous metal halide lamps.

“The new lighting has improved broadcast quality and be a much better viewing experience on-track for patrons,” Bell said.

The Andrews Labor Government contributed more than $1.63 million from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, while HRV contributed a further $545,000 for the upgrades.

“We thank the Victorian Government for its ongoing support to progress these great initiatives,” Bell said.

“Tabcorp Park Melton is a wonderful venue and improvements such as this will further enhance our relationship with the Melton community.”
