Elite young reinsman James Herbertson has reflected on his 2023 season and spoken about ambitions and plans for the rest of 2024 during a special interview with Paul Campbell from Campbell’s Comments.
The 24-year-old won both the Victorian Concession and Victorian Driver of the Year titles after a campaign that returned a remarkable 252 winners last year.
“24 and being able to do something like that is a testament to opportunity and a little bit of hard work along the way, but mainly opportunity,” Herbertson said.
The winner of 1238 races has amassed 152 wins to date in 2024.
“I want to get to 250 wins this year, and I am over 150 wins and we are half-way through the year,” he said. “It is doable, but the foot has to be planted flat to the floor to manage that. It’s daunting, but it is doable.”
The Lexton horseman has achieved four Group 1 successes since starting his career back in 2015, and is driven to continue chasing top-tier glory.
“The good races will come as they will. I don’t think you can make that happen, you just have to be fortunate enough to get on the right horses,” he said.
“I think if I can continue to drive as many horses as possible and I can find those nicer horses, I will stick with them when they come around.”
