He’s back! Catch A Wave wows in brilliant Melton trial

Catch A Wave returned to the track with a bang at Melton on Tuesday afternoon and we could see the star pacer back at the races as soon as July 22.

The Andy Gath-trained million-dollar winner starred in his first public hit-out since his Miracle Mile victory in March with a scintillating trial success at Victorian harness racing headquarters.

He sat last in the field of four and rattled off great closing sectionals to win by about a length on the line.

“I’ve got his last quarter in 26.4 and 27-something down the back, so roughly around 54 his last half and he done it so well. He was strong on the line,” Gath said.

“It’s exactly what we wanted… it’s just the perfect hit-out for him.”

Gath remained on the fence in regards to whether Catch A Wave would need another trial or now head to the races.

“We will just play it by ear, we will see how he pulls up,” Gath said.

“Obviously there’s not a lot of options for him. He’s going to have to race in metro races.

“So if he’s pulled up well, we might see him within a fortnight.”

The son of Captaintreacherous is second favourite to win the inaugural running of the TAB Eureka on September 2, with Queensland gun Leap To Fame the current punters’ pick at $2.50.

Catch A Wave is also a possible starter in a planned exhibition trial at Geelong on August 4.

There is the potential he will line-up against TAB Eureka rivals Captain Ravishing and The Lost Storm in between races at the meeting.
