I Am Wilma sprints to Bill Collins glory

SEN Victoria Cup night delivered plenty of memorable moments on Saturday, with Chris Lang and I Am Wilma adding another Group 1 success to their record in the Aldebaran Park Bill Collins Sprint.

The Chris Lang-trained mare chalked up the second Group 1 success of her career when she sprint-laned her way to victory.

Chris Alford elected to surrender the lead on I Am Wilma at the bell to the heavily backed favourite Gandhi Mail, who was supported in from $16 to start the $3.60 favourite.

I Am Wilma ($4) charged through along the sprint lane to score from Lovemeto and Imperial Monarch in a mile rate of 1:53.

“It’s a big thrill to win a Group 1. It doesn’t matter whether you are out there or not, and one thing is for sure: with our man Chris Alford in the bike, they are going to be given every opportunity,” Lang said.

“He didn’t follow instructions tonight, but thank Christ for that, and he drove it very well,” he said.

The win was Alford’s fifth success in the race, having previously won it with Glenbogle (2006), Kyvalley Blur (2013), Maori Time (2016) and Queen Elida in 2023.
