Normally a wide second-row draw would be cause for concern, but connections of quality filly Ideal Frankie aren’t fussed.
Engaged in a Vicbred Super Series final at Melton Entertainment Park on Saturday night, the star pacer faces an arduous task after receiving barrier 12 in the Group 1 feature.
Sure, the draw is far from perfect, but trainer Allan McDonough believes divine intervention will light the way into the winner’s circle.
McDonough co-owns Ideal Frankie with John Montesano, who named the two-year-old in honour of his brother Frank, who passed away last year.
“I think Frank even played a part in us buying her,” McDonough said.
“She was offered at the Australian Pacing Gold Yearling Sale, but never met her reserve and was passed in, which turned out great for us.
“It was actually after the sale had come and gone that John wanted to buy a yearling in honour of his brother, so for her to be available is a story in itself.
“Frank was Frankie, so naming her was obvious.
“It has already been an amazing ride with her and, having Frank smiling down on us, I know he will be there again on Saturday night.”
Boasting an almost impeccable record of five wins from six starts, Ideal Frankie is aiming for a Vicbred clean sweep having captured her heat and semi.
With regular driver Mark Pitt committed to Kahula from barrier five, Ideal Frankie will be partnered by McDonough’s son, Bailey, who will make the trip from Sydney.
“She has come through the qualifying rounds in great shape and has been working a treat this week,” McDonough said.
“I couldn’t have her in any better condition going into the final … now it’s up to Bailey on the night.”
McDonough also has Dreams Forever drawn in barrier seven, with the daughter of Ride High gaining a berth in the final on the strength of a second in a heat and fourth during last weekend’s semis.
“She’s a handy filly who is improving as she goes,” McDonough said.
“She has only had three starts for a second and a pair of fourths.
“She drew six in the heat and semi and now she has a terrible draw in the final, so she’s going to need a lot of luck.”
Elsewhere on the card, McDonough will be represented by Major Blitz in the decider for three-year-old colts and geldings.
