Kyle Marshall and his special horse Smoken Ace

Three years ago, New Zealand trainer-driver Kyle Marshall and his partner Sophie Jefferies made the move to Victoria, and they have quickly made their mark on the state’s harness racing scene.

Marshall has enjoyed plenty of success since making the move, including Country Cup victories and track records, but it is his special pacer Smoken Ace who has been at the forefront of his rise. The talented gelding has won feature races, broken track records and recently delivered Marshall his first Group victory when taking out the Group 3 VHRC Caduceus Classic.

Now, Smoken Ace will line up in this Saturday night’s Smoken Up Sprint, a Listed Classic, before Marshall sets his sights on the major target of the Group 1 SEN Victoria Cup at Melton on October 17.

Marshall has also recently welcomed star young pacer Hesitate to the stable, with the exciting youngster now working towards the TAB Eureka.

Bronte Nieuwenburg caught up with Kyle to chat about his journey in harness racing and the impact Smoken Ace has had on his career.
