Former New Zealand superstar Lazarus has made a spectacular start to his siring career in North America.

From his first crop of 92 foals, the young Bettor’s Delight stallion had 43 starters at the early baby qualifiers for 10 winners, including nine in 2:00 and seven in 1:58, according to the US Trotting Association’s statistics department on June 23.

Lazarus is expected to dominate the three $US30,000 Sires Stakes heats for New Jersey-bred two-year-olds at The Meadowlands on Friday night (8.20am Saturday Melbourne time).

“The staggering fact is that of the 32 two-year-olds racing in those three heats, 28 are by Lazarus. That is an incredible number,” Lazarus’s part-owner and international bloodstock agent John Curtin said.

“In the third division for two-year-old colts and geldings, all 12 starters were sired by Lazarus.

“It’s hard to believe, but I have watched all the baby races since they started two to three weeks ago and I have been really impressed by almost all the runners by Lazarus that I have seen to date.”

Curtin said that many of the Lazarus stock looked sharp in the qualifiers, but four really caught the eye.

“I was really impressed by the colts Life’s A Puzzle (out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare L Dee’s Lioness), Voukefalas (out of the Cam’s Fortune mare Inittowinafortune) and Laz (out of the Art Major mare She’s Da Bomb) and the filly Fox Valley Adele (out of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Put On A Display).”

A 15-time Group 1 winner who established eight track records in NZ and Australia, Lazarus bred 133 mares in his first season in 2019, 106 in 2020 and 107 in 2021 in North America.

In Australia, he had 40 live foals in his first crop and 25 from his second, while in NZ he had 18 live foals in his initial crop and bred 76 mares last season.

Lazarus stands at Deo Volente Farms at Flemington, New Jersey while at the stud in America and Nevele R Stud, Christchurch, NZ during the southern hemisphere season.
