Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 2240m Benstud Standardbreds FFA
1/8 Fighter Command – Jason Lee/Jess Tubbs
Fighter Command failed here as a short-priced favourite last time out but was forced to do plenty of work in very quick time and stuck to the task well for fourth. He’s worth another chance based on what was one of his career-best runs prior. Expect him to come off the fence early and position to work up with cover over the final lap before unleashing his powerful finish.

Race 2 – 1720m – Waste Sense Pace
2/5 Isolation – James Herbertson/Patrick Tomkinson
The most open race of the night, with several in-form and high-quality runners engaged. Whilst Isolation steps up in grade here, his two runs back from a spell have been hard to ignore, running very good time either in front or coming off the speed. He can use this gate over the short trip to get the jump on some of his better-credentialled rivals off the back row.

Race 3 – 1720m Hygain Edge Vicbred Voucher Pace
3/10 Most Exciting – Mark Pitt/Emma Stewart
Most Exciting comes through the 3yo Vicbred Series, where he won his semi-final and ran a good third in the final after getting shuffled back along the pegs. He has a very strong record over this distance at this track, and despite drawing awkwardly off the back row, his toughness and ability to run time can offset that.

Race 4 – 1720m – Hip Pocket Castlemaine Pace
4/7 Pistol Pearce – Kate Gath/Andy Gath
Very tricky race to assess, with many of these bringing solid provincial form, but not necessarily the same quality at metro level. Pistol Pearce at least brings some solid form lines, with the winner from his last-start second looking good since, while his prior efforts here were solid in stronger company. Whilst his map seems a little uncertain, this is the most suitable opposition he’s faced in recent times.

Race 5 – 2240m – Dynamic Print Group Trot
5/9 Kyvalley Michael – Chris Alford/Brent Lilley
Kyvalley Michael comes off a complete forgive run last week, where he was never able to get into the race from his back-row draw. His form prior was very good, including a win three starts back where he was driven like the best horse and ran away from them. Although this race presents as slightly harder than last time, he’s going well enough to be a strong value play.

Race 6 – 2240m – Nutrien Equine Trot
6/8 Quirky Character – James Herbertson/Ross Graham
Quirky Character is starting to look back to his best over his past few runs, including last week when he was finding the line very strongly over the short trip in a race where they ran a solid last half. He’s drawn awkwardly again, but there might be a bit of speed off the front row to suit him coming home strongly over the final stages.

Race 7 – 2240m – Aldebaran Park Tatlow Stakes (2yo Trotters)
7/3 Phoenix Rex – Glen Craven/Steven Loftus
A high-quality bunch of 2yo trotters, none more so than Phoenix Rex, whose raw talent and ability have seen him win four of five, including an impressive feature victory in Queensland. He had a setback and was scratched from the Vicbred Final, where he would have been a strong winning hope. He still has a few quirks, but the ability is there and, if he puts it all together, he can be too good for them.

Race 8 – 2240m – Mimosa Homes Victorian Sires Classic (3yo Colts & Geldings)
8/7 Brooklyn Dan – Mark Pitt/Emma Stewart
Brooklyn Dan has established himself as one of the best 3yos in the country, winning six of nine this season, including a G2 feature in NSW. He also competed over the Brisbane winter carnival, yielding a victory and a fifth as favourite in the G1 Queensland Derby. He’s had a solid trial leading into this and, despite drawing awkwardly, his class and quality can carry him a long way.

Race 9 – 2240m – Forty Winks Melton Gold Chalice (3yo Fillies)
9/2 Tactically Perfect – Jason Lee/Marg & Paddy Lee
Tactically Perfect gets the barrier draw and fitness advantage here over main rival Willows Girl, who’s first-up off a solid trial but faces map challenges from out wide. Tactically Perfect has won three of four, and her only defeat came when she was drawn awkwardly and the race was effectively over by the time she got clear. This is her biggest task to date, but the way she’s trending, she’s up to it.

Race 10 – 1720m – Hyland Racing Colours Trotters FFA
10/6 Lovemeto – Chris Svanosio/Chris Svanosio
Lovemeto is first-up since the Inter Dominion series, where he won a heat and finished sixth in the final after drawing awkwardly. He’s had three good trials leading into this and races particularly well at this track, with 13 top three finishes from 15 Melton starts. He is drawn wide but, in the small field, he can assess the early speed, find the right map and show his class.
