Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence - and a touch of excitement - to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 2240m Hip Pocket Castlemaine Pace
1/10 My Ultimate Barney – Kate Gath/Andy Gath
My Ultimate Barney broke through for a deserved win last start for Andy Gath, showing great tenacity over this trip. He’s racing well enough to do work again if needed or come with a run. Should be in the finish either way.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $1.40
Race 2 – 2240m Australian Pacing Gold Pace
2/9 Browniesatmidnight – Glen Craven/Marg & Paddy Lee
Browniesatmidnight stepped up in grade last start but worked too hard early and couldn’t finish off. He maps much better here with the soft draw and the trip suits. He’s progressive and worth another look.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $1.50
Race 3 – 2240m Aldebaran Park Trot
3/9 Little Yankee – Connor Ronan/Lindsay Rogers
Little Yankee is an honest type and that consistency counts in a race where others have patchy form. He’s drawn to get a soft run and with the right tempo, his closing speed can be lethal.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $1.90
Race 4 – 1720m Dynamic Print Group Trot
4/2 Dichotomy – Kerryn Manning/Jess Tubbs
Dichotomy looks ideally placed dropping back in class after a strong showing behind elite mares. She’s a high-quality trotter and two runs back was simply too tough for some of these.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $1.60
Race 5 – 1720m Nevele R Stud Pace
5/8 The Narcissist – Mark Pitt/Emma Stewart
A cracking clash between rising stars The Narcissist and Fighter Command. Tactics could decide it, but despite the awkward draw, The Narcissist may just have the edge. Whichever way it goes, both are going on to better things.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $2.00
Race 6 – 2240m Yabby Dam Farms Trotters Free For All
6/2 Parisian Artiste – Tayla French/Alex Ashwood
Arcee Phoenix is the class act resuming off a big NZ win and a sharp trial, but this is a launching pad for bigger things. Parisian Artiste is fit, in form, and suited by the conditions - he looks the value play.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $2.00
Race 7 – 2240m Benstud Standardbreds 3yo Pace
7/7 Keayang Hollywood – Glen Craven/Marg & Paddy Lee
It shapes as a two-horse race between Crocodile Socks and Keayang Hollywood. The former has the map advantage, but Hollywood has class and may just be strong enough to win even if parked.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.20
Race 8 – 2240m Mimosa Homes Mares FFA
8/6 Rakero Rebel – James Herbertson/Jess Tubbs
Rakero Rebel has been superb this prep and across her career, firmly placing her among the nation’s elite mares. The draw isn’t ideal, but with Herbertson aboard she still looks one of the night’s better bets.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.90
Race 9 – 2240m Renown Silverware 3yo Trot
9/5 Mystery Fred – Kerryn Manning /Peter Manning
Mystery Fred was outstanding last start, sitting outside the lead, overracing, and still proving too strong. His prior runs suggested a win was coming. If he holds that level, he’ll take catching.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.00
