Harness Racing Australia has recognised five outstanding contributors to its industry through its prestigious Merit Awards.
The Merit Awards recognise decades of dedication, leadership and service including administration, training and media, celebrating those who have helped shape and strengthen Australian harness racing.
At Friday’s Annual General Meeting prior of the Inter Dominion Championships, the HRA membership voted to recognise the following Merit Award recipients. They are:
- Distinguished Service Award – Robert Marshall (NSW);
- Distinguished Service Award – Paul Rowse (VIC);
- Meritorious Service Award – Greg and Skye Bond (WA); and
- Joseph Coulter Meritorious Service Award – Dan Mielicki (VIC).
HRA Chief Executive Richard Goodbody said each recipient had made an enduring impact on the industry.
“The HRA Merit Awards recognise individuals whose commitment, leadership and passion have left a lasting legacy on Australian harness racing. Each and every one of this year’s recipients has made an extraordinary contribution to our sport, and it is a privilege to recognise their achievements on behalf of the national industry.”
Distinguished Service Award – Robert Marshall
Robert Marshall was recognised for more than 35 years of distinguished service to harness racing administration at club, state, national and international levels.
His contribution has included leadership roles with the NSW Harness Racing Club, Australian Pacing Gold, the Inter Dominion Harness Racing Council and the Australian Harness Racing Council, while helping guide the industry through significant challenges including Equine Influenza and the COVID-19 pandemic.
His nomination demonstrated exceptional long-term leadership and governance contributions across multiple levels of the industry.
Mr Goodbody said Mr Marshall’s influence extended well beyond the boardroom.
“Robert’s contribution to harness racing has been exceptional. Across more than three decades he has provided steady leadership, sound governance and an unwavering commitment to advancing the industry. His service has benefited participants across Australia, and this recognition is richly deserved.”
Distinguished Service Award – Paul Rowse
Paul Rowse received a Distinguished Service Award in recognition of almost 30 years of service to harness racing administration, including two decades as Chief Executive Officer of the Ballarat and District Trotting Club.
His leadership has extended through Trots Clubs Victoria, numerous industry committees and the delivery of significant infrastructure projects and major racing events.
His nomination reflected substantial service, leadership and professional excellence within harness racing administration.
Mr Goodbody said Mr Rowse had helped position Ballarat as one of the nation’s premier harness racing venues.
“Paul has been one of the outstanding administrators in Australian harness racing. His leadership, professionalism and vision have strengthened not only his own club, but the broader Victorian and national industry. His contribution over many years has been immense.”
Meritorious Service Award – Greg and Skye Bond
Western Australian training partnership Greg and Skye Bond were honoured with the Meritorious Service Award after establishing one of Australia’s most successful harness racing stables.
Their achievements include more than 2,300 winners, over $30 million in prizemoney, 22 Group 1 victories and induction into the Western Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
The Bonds’ nomination highlighted sustained excellence, professionalism and long-term contribution to the advancement of harness racing.
Mr Goodbody said the Bonds had set the benchmark for excellence.
“Greg and Skye have built an extraordinary training operation through hard work, innovation and sustained excellence. Their success on the track has inspired countless participants and enhanced the profile of Australian harness racing both within Western Australia and nationally.”
Joseph Coulter Meritorious Service Award – Dan Mielicki
Dan Mielicki was bestowed with the Joseph Coulter Meritorious Service Award in recognition of more than three decades of outstanding service to harness racing through the media.
Since becoming Harness Racing Victoria’s lead race caller in 1996, Mielicki has become one of the sport’s most recognisable voices while promoting harness racing across television, radio and print.
His nomination aligned strongly with the Joseph Coulter Meritorious Service Award category recognising long-term service to harness racing through the media.Mr Goodbody said Mielicki’s contribution to the sport reached far beyond the broadcast booth.
“Dan’s passion for harness racing has resonated with generations of participants and fans. His professionalism, enthusiasm and ability to tell the stories of our sport have made him one of harness racing’s most respected and recognisable ambassadors.
This honour acknowledges an outstanding career dedicated to promoting our industry.
“Mr Goodbody said the HRA Merit Awards remained among the organisation’s highest honours.
“These awards celebrate people who have given so much of themselves to harness racing. On behalf of Harness Racing Australia and the wider industry, I congratulate Robert, Paul, Greg, Skye and Dan on receiving this well-earned recognition.”
HRA will work with its State Controlling Bodies and Metropolitan Clubs to formally present the Merit Awards to each inductee.
