The battle for Victoria's metropolitan drivers' premiership is down to two familiar faces.

With just a month of the season remaining, Kate Gath and Mark Pitt are level with 49 wins.

Pitt, who won the title for the first time last season, grabbed a share of the lead with a winning double on the Breeders Crown card last Saturday night.

But Gath can strike back with some key drives across all eight races at Melton on Saturday night.

Gath won back-to-back premierships in 2020 and 2021.

Pitt isn't driving at Melton on Saturday night, but can add to his tally with some big chances in Thursday Bendigo Breeders Crown consolations which carry metro status because of their prizemoney.

His best hopes are Sea Silk (race four), Freeasabyrd (five) and Celebrity Royal (seven).

Greg Sugars is four wins off the pace in third spot, but will be away driving at the Brisbane Inter Dominion for the next three weekends.

"I've got some nice drives, but most of them are in even races and it'll come down to luck and what sorts of runs I get," Gath said.

Former Kiwi pacer Corravally Star has awful form on paper, but Gath thinks he could be her best winning hope in the opening race.

"He's coming out of some stronger races in New Zealand," she said.

"You'd sort of compare his form to a horse like Terry, who we've had some success with. Hopefully this guy is a little better.

"We trialled him Monday night (at Melton) and even though we didn't ask him to do too much, he felt like a quality horse. This is definitely a winnable race for him."

Talented three-year-old Cool Night backs up in race four after an eye-catching fourth in the much stronger Group 1 Breeders Crown final last Saturday night.

"He's racing so well," Gath said.

"He's obviously the class horse of the race, but it's only 1200m which is different for him. He's drawn wide, but would've gone back anyway. Hopefully they run along and he'll be hard to hold out."

Gath said former Kiwi pair Magnetic Terror (race two) and Sly Terror (race eight) also had winning claims.

"Magnetic Terror was a bit disappointing first-up, but he's better than that and this sort of race suits him with luck from the draw (gate nine)," she said.

"I think Sly Terror will run well in the last (race). We haven't trialled him, but it's not an overly strong race for the sort of class he's in."

Gath admits she'll also be watching the Brisbane Inter Dominion series closely after finishing a close second in last year's trotting final with Majestuoso and winning the 2018 trotting final with Tornado Valley.

"That win with Tornado Valley, in a hometown Inter Dominion, was really special. The Inter Dominion has so much history," she said.

"Just Believe only just got the better of us in last year's final and what he's done since in Sweden was fantastic. Wouldn't it be something if he could come back and win the (Inter Dominion) final again in Brisbane."
