Well-known Victorian trainer-driver Brian Shelley passed away on Tuesday, December 3 aged 80.
Shelley grew up in the sport with his father Jack, having some very smart trotters with the ‘Miracle’ prefix in their name during the halcyon days when based in Ascot Vale.
Progressing into the training ranks, Shelley was successful with horses such as Whataguy, Gallant Flyer, Clementine and Alba Rama while also driving them to victory. Others to win were Whataguy, Megalite (1986 Adelaide Trotters Derby), Heza Bloomfield, Buddabuddah and Obliging.
Shifting to South Australia in the 1990s, he trained and drove numerous winners during a four or five-year stay. They included Champagne Kid, Chauvinist, Glendalough and The Driller plus many of those mentioned above.
More successes came on his return to Victoria with names such as Myzami, Montana Miss, Come On Max, Malhana Miss, Le Petite Corporal and Heartbroke.
Shelley will be missed by his many friends in the industry, none more than life-long associate John Foley (another Ascot Vale resident).
His funeral will be held on Monday, December 16 at the Joyce Chapel, Fawkner Memorial Park commencing at 11.45am.
Harness Racing Victoria sends sincere condolences to Shelley's family and friends.
