It is with great sadness that the harness racing industry farewells Mrs Denise Gath, the beloved wife of legendary trainer-driver Brian Gath, who has passed away aged 76.
Denise had been unwell for a lengthy period, suffering from dementia, which sadly took its toll on Monday, September 29, when she passed away at 6.30pm.
Denise and Brian had been inseparable since their marriage 56 years ago, sharing a wonderful life together. She was a devoted mother to son Matthew (Matty) and daughter Kylie, and adored her grandchildren Blake, Louis, Connor and Sam.
Denise was a familiar and much-loved face at the races, usually accompanying Brian and always enjoying being there alongside him.
If she was unable to attend, regardless of the time Brian returned home from the races, Denise would always have dinner ready for him so they could sit down and enjoy a meal together.
Although not listed as an owner, Denise held shares in a number of horses trained by Brian and took great pleasure in following their careers.
She also loved life on the farm at Longlea, where she cared for a variety of animals and took great pride in looking after them each day.
Denise was a much-loved member of the harness racing family and will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
HRV Chairman Bernard Saundry, along with all those involved in the industry, extends his sincere condolences to Brian, Matty, Kylie and the entire Gath family at this very sad time.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be made.
