The Victorian trotting community was saddened by the passing of one of the industry’s most popular participants, Graham Eeles, aged 80, on October 1 following a prolonged illness.
During the 1980s, Graham raced a handy mare named Sheree Thor, who recorded multiple victories, including four at Moonee Valley when trained and driven by Henry McDermott.
Although Graham was a trainer and driver at one stage, he became more involved in the saddlery side of the sport. After leaving school, he worked at the Commonwealth Bank in Bendigo before establishing himself as a familiar face at the trots, where he regularly had his gear on offer.
Highly knowledgeable in his field, Graham was credited with introducing the first one-leg spreader, while also supplying rugs, boots and other essential items.
Always approachable, Graham was a trusted source of advice, with many participants seeking his guidance on the gear their horses should wear to help maximise their performances.
Living at Murrabit in central Victoria, Graham had curtailed his activities in recent times but attended the most recent meeting at Charlton, where he enjoyed catching up with many old friends.
Harness Racing Victoria chairman Bernard Saundry, on behalf of the industry, extends sincere condolences to Graham’s wife Pam, his family and friends.
A service to remember Graham will be held at 10.30am this Friday, October 9, at William Farmer Funerals, Victoria Street, Eaglehawk.
