Vale Tom McGinley

The harness racing industry in Victoria is mourning the recent passing of former steward Tom McGinley at the age of 90.

Prior to joining Harness Racing Victoria, Tom enjoyed a stellar career as a leading jumps jockey in Australia after emigrating from Scotland in 1965.

Tom is the only hoop to win five VRC Grand National Steeplechases and is better known as the man who partnered the mighty Crisp, the greatest steeplechaser to race in Australia.

Following his career in the saddle, Tom joined the Victoria Racing Club as a steward for a period of six years before serving on the HRV stewards’ panel from 1981 until 1988.

Tom is survived by his wife Irene and children Ian, Stuart, Mandy and Bruce along with his grandchildren and great grandchild.

HRV Chairman Bernard Saundry, on behalf of the entire industry, sends his sincere condolences to Tom’s friends and family.
