TAB Eureka night just got even bigger for Victoria.
After dominating Menangle’s inaugural TAB Eureka last year with Encipher winning the Eureka itself and Rock N Roll Doo taking out the Group 1 Len Smith, the Victorians will be back in force at Sydney’s home of harness on September 7.
Aside from the Victorians already in or expected to tackle the $2.1mil TAB Eureka, Victoria’s top open-class pacer Catch A Wave is Menangle-bound as well.
Trainer Andy Gath confirmed the $150,000 Group 1 Len Smith Mile would be Catch A Wave’s first major target this campaign.
Catch A Wave hasn’t raced since taking Perth by storm with the two biggest wins of his career in the Nullarbor/Fremantle Cup double in April.
Gath confirmed the five-year-old, who boasts 22 wins from just 38 starts and almost $2 million in prize money, would trial at Melton tomorrow (Tuesday) week.
“He’s seems terrific at home and he’s almost ready to go,” Gath said.
“He’ll trial next week and then we’ll look for a race here (Melton).
“The Len Smith is his first target and I’d say he’ll have two lead-up runs.
“His record shows how well he goes on the quick back-up, so we’re keen to race him the week before the Len Smith, whether that’s at Melton or Menangle, we will play by ear.”
There is a 1720m free-for-all at Melton on August 31 and a 1609m free-for-all at Menangle on the same night.
Gath admits he is delighted Leap To Fame won’t be in the Len Smith.
“We’d love to avoid him for as long and as often as possible,” he laughed.
That will change when Catch A Wave returns home after the Len Smith to chase the $300,000 Group 1 Victoria Cup at Melton on October 12.
Leap To Fame’s owner Kevin Seymour has labelled the Victoria Cup a “definite target.”
“We’ve got some unfinished business there after last year,” he said.
Leap To Fame was a beaten favourite, finishing a close third to Act Now with Catch A Wave second.
It’s the only time in three clashes Catch A Wave has beaten Leap To Fame home.
Looking further ahead, Gath underlined his wish to return to Perth for the $450,000 Group 1 WA Pacing Cup on November 11.
“We’ll go as long as we’re happy with him at the time and we can get suitable flights over and back,” he said.
“He absolutely thrived over there back in April and anywhere you can race for that sort of money without having Leap To Fame to contend with is a good option.”
Whether WA happens or not, Gath has ruled-out a Sydney Inter Dominion tilt.
“I’m not keen. There’s lots of good races for him early next year, so he can have a quieter time through the end of November and December and aim towards them,” he said.
Races like the Hunter Cup, Miracle Mile and even a return to Perth to defend his $1.25mil Group 1 Nullarbor title all await Catch A Wave early next year.
WA officials confirmed the 2025 Nullarbor would be held on Anzac Day (April 25).
