When looking at form, sometimes a horse can sneak through under the radar with sectional results just as impressive as the race favourites. In the case of the Breeders Crown finals on Saturday night, there are a few sectional stars that may end up being diamonds in the rough.

Here's my full breakdown of horses in each final, who based on their sectional results, may just be capable of an upset to light up the tote board.

Race 3: 3YO Trotting Colts and Geldings

Diamond in the rough: Grumpee

Two starts back, Grumpee ran a strong personal mile rate at Melton of 1.56.8 when second behind Gaelic Lad. He is a consistent horse who has the capability of running a very fast last 400m when saved for one run.

Special mention: Mipersonaljet

Race 4: 3YO Trotting Fillies

Diamond in the rough: Aldebaran Miley

Has sectionally performed well three of her last four starts and is capable of a brilliant last 400m sprint. Recently, she’s had to work hard and make her own luck. However, she’s drawn well (two) and is likely to find a good position early. If Shesawish and Rockinwithattitude go hard early and Aldebaran Miley has been sitting quietly behind them, she will be dangerous late.

Special mention: Valerie Lane

Race 5: 2YO Colts and Geldings

Diamond in the rough: Miki To Success

Arguably the strongest race on the card with an incredible front line of horses. On sectional times, there is very little separating all the big guns in this race, including horses at wider odds such as Miki To Success. His sectional performance was huge three starts back when he finished fifth behind Stormryder. In this run, he had to cover an extra 34 metres on the race distance. On that performance, if he had been racing on the fence, he would have run a mile rate of 1.52.8.

Special mentions: Smoken Ace, Some American and Nathan Street

Race 6: 2YO Fillies

Diamond in the rough: Destiny Stride

Destiny Stride finished third last start behind Very Pretty in the Breeders Crown semi-finals and had to cover an extra 24 metres on the race distance as she was racing wide. When converting her sectional mile rate (1.56.2) to a peg line equivalent, she would have run 1.55.2. Favourites Very Pretty and Draw a Dream will be very hard to run past, but Destiny Stride appears good value for exotics.

Special mention: Millwood Bliss

Race 7: 3YO Colts and Geldings

Diamond in the rough: Final Collect

Final Collect is a very strong, consistent and reliable horse who was placed in both his heat and semi-final after doing work early. He’s a very versatile horse and the draw allows him to be saved for one run. He might be charging home best if the leaders go hard early.

Special mention: Blazing Home

Race 8: 3YO Fillies

Diamond in the rough: Perfect In Pink

Perfect In Pink always has an incredibly strong last 400m. She can often get a bit lost at the start with her lack of gate speed, but if she can hold a three-fence position on Saturday night, her last 400m could be dangerous if the front-runners are tired.

Special mention: Paradise Valley

Race 9: 2YO Trotting Colts and Geldings

Diamond in the rough: Phoenix Red

Phoenix Red has only had three starts and is still learning what racing is all about. However, behind the greenness, this eye-catching chestnut has shown a huge amount of ability when he does everything right. He has a very fast last 400m sprint and will be flashing home late if he stays trotting.

Special mention: Kyvalley Michael

Race 10: 2YO Trotting Fillies

Diamond in the rough: Third Eye

Nordic Reign, sired by first-season sire Volstead, is understandably the hot favourite in this race. However, Third Eye, one of Volstead’s other daughters, would not surprise if she was to prevail. Matthew Gath’s charge ran sensational times two starts back that are better than the rest of the field’s recent individual numbers. Her behaviour can be risky, but if she does everything right, she will be a big factor in the finish.

Special mention: Maoris Mac (another Volstead)
