Victorian bred square-gaiters make up two-thirds of the 12-horse field for Saturday night’s $150,000 Inter Dominion Trotting Championship Grand Final at Menangle.

The eight-strong Vicbred contingent is headed up by ruling favourite The Locomotive who is attempting to make a clean sweep of the series.

The four-year-old entire is one of four finalists bred by Pat Driscoll’s Yabby Dam Farms, the others being Parisian Artiste, Keayang Chucky and The Locomotive’s close relative, Royal Dan.

Duncan McPherson’s Aldebaran Park has brought out two finalists in Aldebaran Zeus and Aldebaran Vera.

The other Vicbred finalists are Speedy Lover and Keayang Stuka.

NSW has a single representative in the Victorian-trained Plymouth Chubb, while the three-prong New Zealand-bred entry includes Mufasa Metro and the siblings Queen Elida and Toro Stride.

Love You has sired five of the qualifiers, while Sundon figures as the damsire of three finalists.

Queen Elida and Keayang Stuka are the first foals of their dams, Toro Stride and Parisian Artiste are second foals, Royal Dan (3rd), Aldebaran Zeus (4th), Aldebaran Vera (5th), Keayang Chucky (6th), Speedy Lover (7th), Mufasa Metro and Plymouth Chubb (9th) and The Locomotive (13th foal).

There are two Victorian bred runners in the $500,000 Inter Dominion Pacing Championship Grand Final in Dangerous and Curly James.

NSW is represented by four finalists, namely Captain’s Knock, Max Delight, Jimartee and Jilliby Nitro, while the lone Queensland bred entry is Don Hugo.

The remaining five finalists – Minstrel, Nerano, Terry, Pete’s Said So and My Moonlite Dream – were all bred in NZ.

Bettor’s Delight is the only stallion with multiple representation in Max Delight and Jilliby Nitro and he also figures as the damsire of Don Hugo.

Art Major ranks as the sire of Don Hugo and the damsire of Max Delight, while In The Pocket’s daughters have left two finalists, Captain’s Knock and Pete’s Said So.

Don Hugo and Curly James are both first foals, Max Delight (2nd), Minstrel, Jimartee and Jilliby Nitro (3rd), Dangerous and Nerano (4th), Captain’s Knock and My Moonlite Dream (5th), Terry (6th) and Pete’s Said So (11th).


The siblings Ruby Wingate and Wingate Guy quinellaed a race at Melton last Saturday, while another sibling Iamawingate won at Warragul on Monday


Yabby Dam Farms will be offering nine yearlings at the NZ sales in February comprising three lots at Karaka on February 15 and six at Christchurch (February 18)


Victorian breeders led in the winners of both the NZ pacing and trotting derbies at Addington. Benstud Standardbreds brought out the winner of the $310,000 Pacing Derby  in We Walk By Faith, while Marg and Paddy Lee bred the winner of the $200,000 Trotting Derby in Keayang Zahara
