Ashwood, Smith and Dunn recovering after Mildura fall

The harness racing industry’s best wishes are with Alex Ashwood, David Smith and Aaron Dunn as the three reinsmen recover from a significant fall at Mildura on Friday night.

The incident in The Gateway Pace, race two on the program, saw that trio and reinsman Ryan Sanderson all receiving medical attention after a fall involving horses Doc Harvey (Sanderson), Major West (Smith), Good Onya (Ashwood) and Havelock (Dunn).

While stewards pleasingly reported soon after that all horses were “cleared of serious injury”, Ashwood and Smith were transferred to hospital for further assessment.

Stewards tonight confirmed that Ashwood suffered a broken wrist and facial fractures, which required surgery. Ashwood also suffered a suspected hairline fracture in his back.

Toby McKinnon reported on TrotsVision tonight that surgery had gone well and Ashwood was recovering.

Stewards also reported that Smith suffered a broken wrist, which will require surgery, and a back fracture, which will be continually assessed.

Dunn is suffering hip pain and will likely have x-rays either today or tomorrow.

All three have been stood down from driving pending medical clearance.

Sanderson has been cleared of injury and resumed his driving tonight at Ballarat, winning the Ballarat Sound Pace with Geoff Webster’s four-year-old Tuppence.
