An Early Look: Hot heats to kick-start Mildura carnival

Five 2021 Trots Country Cups Championship winners will be among those vying for victory in the Sunraysia’s time-honoured feature next week.

Two $10,000 heats have been assembled for the Tasco Petroleum Mildura Pacing Cup, with the first five horses across the line in each of Tuesday night’s qualifiers scoring a place in the $60,000 final on Saturday evening.

Last-start Ouyen Pacing Cup champ Blaster Ranger (Shane Sanderson) will come up against Charlton winner Like A Wildfire (Emma Stewart) in the first heat, while Greg Norman-trained Zadaka (Ararat Pacing Cup), Stewart’s Mach Dan (Horsham Pacing Cup) and David Aiken’s Malcolms Rhythm (Echuca Pacing Cup) all lock horns in the second heat.

Tabcorp Park Melton winners from last weekend Sonny Weaver (Russell Jack) and Bulletproof Boy (Scott Ewen) are also there, while the consistent Somewhere Secret rounds out the Stewart assault on the race.

Merbein South trainer Luke Watson, who has Caulonia Terror, and Birdwoodton’s Lachlan Prothero, who prepares Egodan, are the local hopes in the Group 2 event.

Tuesday night’s 10-race card includes heats for the Euston Club Pace, Park Douglas Printing Pace and Tenderprint Australia Cup.

The highly-anticipated Mildura carnival includes Friday and Saturday meetings, with a big team from Harness Racing Victoria heading to the region to bring you all of the action throughout the week.
