History beckons as Kate and Emma near metro crowns

Whatever the outcome of tomorrow night’s exciting Vicbred Super Series Group 1 finals, history will be made at Tabcorp Park Melton when trainer Emma Stewart and driver Kate Gath win their respective metropolitan premierships, the first time women have won both awards in the same year.

While Stewart has had a mortgage on the Taylors Metropolitan Trainers’ Premiership since first winning it in 2014-15, tonight marks a first for Gath, whose 66 wins this season have her 13 clear of Chris Alford, breaking the latter’s six-year streak in the Schweppes Metropolitan Drivers’ Premiership.

“It’s very surprising, it’s a massive achievement that I never thought that I’d get, so I’m really happy with it,” Gath said.

She joins six-time winner Kerryn Manning as the only females to win the award and will have great opportunity to add to her total tonight, with steers on Pacifico Dream and highly-rated fillies Amelia Rose and Tough Tilly among eight drives.

Both Amelia Rose and Tough Tilly are trained by Stewart, who has qualified an extraordinary 16 starters for tonight’s finals, in addition to a further three by training partner Clayton Tonkin.

As well as another season atop the metropolitan standings, Stewart will also win a sixth consecutive state trainers’ premiership, while Alford will win the Garrards State Drivers’ Premiership for an extraordinary 15th time.
