Glenn Conroy expects to have his hand in the air this Sunday at the 2019 Australasian Premier Trotting Sale, outlining his enthusiasm for the big day in the latest edition of the Tooth Be Told podcast.
Host Paul Campbell chatted with a key member of a beloved trots family in a wide-ranging chat that zeroed in on Sunday’s sale, which kicks off at 11am at Inglis Sales Complex.
“There is great value in the sales, because if you go down there and pick a yearling … it’s nice and quiet, it’s straight forward, you can have a look at it and go and get it and practically drive it around in a fortnight,” Conroy said.
“You buy a horse that’s in the sales, it’s (often) already staked for Breeders Crown, Vicbred, Bathurst Gold Crown most times, (and) there’s a new series that’s starting this year with the APTS. There’s 80 horses all up (at this sale), so why wouldn’t you pay up for that (series)?
“When it’s a three-year-old there’s two divisions – colts and geldings and the fillies – your a chance of racing in a $50,000 race. In a $50,000 race … you get $1000 if you run last. I think that’s a gimme that you should pay up for that if you buy the horse.”
Conroy said he had picked through the sale’s catalogue and told the podcast, which can be heard below or through Harness Racing Victoria’s Trots Media podcast channel, the yearling he’d pick if money was no option.
The seasoned auction buyer also offered advice to newcomers.
“Read your results and have a look back at the catalogues two or three years ago, which you can do easily, they are all online now,” Conroy said.
“There’s a lot of luck in it. Don’t think that the bloke that paid $90,000 for the yearling and tops the sales that he’s going to be beating you for the rest of your life, because he may not. You can buy a really good raffle ticket for $5000 or $6000, ready for yourself or your trainer to take over and live the dream.”
