Vale John Armstrong

Melton harness racing identity John Armstrong passed away recently following a lengthy illness aged 87.

Born in Footscray, John was actively involved in harness racing as a trainer driver and breeder for more than 46 years.

A structural steel fabricator by trade, John purchased land in Melton in 1973 before building a house, shed and a half mile all-weather track.

“Johnny built everything on the property himself,” his wife Meg said.

John had to receive special dispensation from stewards to drive in races after losing a leg due to cancer at the age of 45.

“Johnny actually beat cancer twice,” Meg said.

John bred and raced several handy performers over the years including metropolitan winner Downunder and Richmond Road.

John is survived by his wife Meg and son John Jnr.
