Gate six for Leap To Fame as champ chases mega A. G. Hunter Cup  bonus
Champion pacer Leap To Fame may have to do what he couldn’t do last year to win a $1 million bonus in Saturday night’s Group 1 Sportsbet A G Hunter Cup at Melton.
Mighty stayer and arch-rival Swayzee drew better in gate two and is the most likely of the big guns to find the lead. Leap To Fame snared gate six, while new sensation Kingman has the back row (gate 10).
Swayzee used a better draw to lead, smash the track record and beat a gallant Leap To Fame in last year’s Hunter Cup. It was the second time Swayzee had led and beaten Leap To Fame.
“He’s going to have to earn it now, that’s for sure,” Leap To Fame’s trainer-driver Grant Dixon said.
“The draw isn’t perfect, but we’ve had more difficult ones. The way I see it, there are as many positives and negatives.
“I rate Kingman the hardest to beat and the back row isn’t good for him, so that’s a help, but then you’ve got Swayzee and Republican Party (gate one) drawn inside us.
“Republican Party is the biggest winner from the draw. As we know, especially at Melton, the fence is gold in these races and he’ll be on the fence, either behind the leader or three pegs. “We’re going to have to be right at the top of our game, but all the signs are he is.”
Ewen upbeat as Bulletproof Boy lines up in Hunter Cup
Scott Ewen is hoping for no more bad luck heading into Saturday night’s A G Hunter Cup in Melton.
Set to contest last season’s edition with stable star Bulletproof Boy, Ewen was left gutted when he had to scratch the son of Art Official just days before the Group 1.
“Everything was going smoothly, then two days before the Cup he hurt his hock,” Ewen said. “We copped it there, but that’s racing.”
To be driven by James Herbertson, Bulletproof Boy will begin from the outside of the front row – barrier seven.
"Hopefully the bad luck is behind us and it’s all good moving forward," Ewen said. “The draw has made it tough, so we’ll be wanting them to go hard upfront early and give an opportunist like him to finish over the top at the end.”
Keayang Zahara stares down 'big unknown' in Great Southern Star
Co-trainer Paddy Lee admits the unique format of the Yabby Dam Farms Great Southern Star is as big a danger as any rival for superstar trotting mare Keayang Zahara at Melton on Saturday night.
The five-year-old boasts 23 wins from 24 starts, including 12 at Group 1 level, but will have to do something she's never done before – race twice on the same night to win and bank a new $500,000 bonus along with the $142,500 first prize.
That's the X-factor of the Great Southern Star with qualifying heats at 6.30pm (race two) and 7.01pm (race three) before the $250,000 Group 1 final at 9.33pm (race eight).
"It's the big unknown, there's no doubt about that," Lee said. "She handles her racing well and usually comes through a run without it taking too much out of her, but this is something totally different.
"I'm glad it's not the first time we've had a crack at the Great Southern Star. It's her first time, but we've had goes before with Keayang Chucky and Keayang Ignite, and I can assure (you) we learnt a lot from that.
"We think it's helped the way we prepare her for the night and what we do with her in the three hours or so between the heat and final. "We're certainly glad she won the three (qualifying) races she needed (for the bonus) before Kilmore last week, which meant we've been able to give her two weeks between runs."

HRV vouchers a Vicbred Platinum boost for the APG sale
Breeding and sales vouchers provided by Harness Racing Victoria to winning owners as part of the new multi-million dollar Vicbred Vouchers Program may be utilised to purchase a Vicbred Platinum or Vicbred Pure yearling at the Australian Pacing Gold Melbourne Yearling Sale on Sunday, February 15.
Fifty lots listed to go under the hammer at the Oaklands Junction sale paddocks can be used by recipients of the HRV Vicbred $5,000 vouchers towards the purchase of a yearling.
The Vicbred Voucher scheme covers 550 races across two seasons conducted at Victorian country tracks and Melton.
In addition, APG and HRV are giving away an additional four $5,000 vouchers on sale day to registered buyers, which can be redeemed towards the purchase of a Vicbred Platinum yearling consigned to the sale.
Reminder: Vicbred Voucher redemption at APG Sales
HRV reminds industry participants of the Vicbred Voucher program's terms and conditions when applying a voucher towards a yearling sale purchase.
The Vicbred Vouchers are only redeemable against yearlings that are deemed either Vicbred Platinum or Vicbred Pure. They are not redeemable for Vicbred-only horses.
The vouchers can also only be used at Victoria's APG or Nutrien sales, not interstate.
To date, HRV has issued more than 200 vouchers, with Victorian owners to race for up to $2.75 million in breeding and sales vouchers under the two-year initiative, which is part of a $3 million industry boost.

MELTON'S SHAKAMAKER DRIVE OPENS FOR PARTICIPANTS ON HUNTER CUP NIGHT
Shakamaker Drive, Melton, will re-open to participants for Saturday's A. G. Hunter Cup night to assist access amid the expected higher traffic volume.
The roadway has been closed for the neighbouring construction works, but Harness Racing Victoria has gained temporary clearance to provide participants quicker access to Melton Entertainment Park’s stabling area. Shakamaker Dr will then re-close for the foreseeable future from Sunday, February 15.

ADDITIONAL MARES-ONLY RACES ADDED TO THE CALENDAR IN 2026
HRV will continue its big program of mares-restricted races through February, March, and beyond, after the success of the concept thus far in 2026.
In collaboration with Harness Breeders Victoria, the racing department trialled additional mares’ races in high horse population areas in January, reinforcing Victoria’s commitment to mares in their racing and breeding careers.
The 10 pacing races drew an above-average 11.2 nominations and 9.2 acceptances per race, while the six trotting races averaged 10.33 nominations and 8.33 acceptances.
In February and March, seven of the races will carry $5000 Vicbred Voucher bonuses for winning owners, all part of Victoria’s $2.75 million ownership and breeding scheme that was launched in September. Winners can redeem their vouchers on stallion services or at select sales. Click here for more details

VICTORIAN 2YO RACES TO BEGIN IN FEBRUARY
Harness Racing Victoria has introduced restricted two-year-old races from February to create more opportunities for young horses.
When applying the same method last year, HRV’s Racing Department found that more two-year-old races received sufficient nominations when opportunities were condensed in the year’s early months.
HRV will once again program two-year-old races at central Victorian venues, where the category’s population is at its greatest, with pacing races to begin in February and trotting races in March.
Two-year-old races will be scheduled as follows:
Feb 11 @ Maryborough (pacers)
Feb 25 @ Maryborough (pacers)
Mar 6 @ Melton (pacers and trotters)
Mar 16 @ Maryborough (pacers and trotters)
Mar 30 @ Maryborough (pacers and trotters)

HRV INTRODUCES KINDERGARTEN AND GRADUATION AUTUMN SERIES
Harness Racing Victoria will introduce two autumn race series for two and three-year-olds.
To provide eligible Victorian horses a prelude into May’s Nutrien Equine Classic Race Series and encourage juvenile racing early in the season, HRV’s racing office will run heats into finals at Maryborough, Bendigo, and Melton.
The graduation series, for horses who have won no more than $10,000 in their lifetimes, will run for three-year-olds of both gaits, beginning with the pacers on March 16.
Three-year-old trotters, along with a kindergarten series for two-year-old pacers and trotters, will start on April 10 and run until April 29. All heats will be for $8000, with $14,000 finals.
See below for the details of each series:
HRV TO INTRODUCE CLAIMING RACES IN FEBRUARY
Harness Racing Victoria will trial pacing claiming races from February to April to provide participants with alternative racing opportunities.
HRV's racing team will review stakeholder feedback and monitor nominations and acceptances to determine whether claiming races should be added to programs beyond that date.
Venues such as Maryborough, Kilmore and Mildura have been identified in the February programs, prioritising those with the highest horse populations.
The racing team will also review the concept and consider whether it should also be applied to trotters in the coming months.
Claiming races scheduled in February:
Feb 18 @ Mildura ($6000 claimer, 2190m, PBD/NR) $4000
Feb 25 @ Maryborough ($6000 claimer, 1690m, PBD/Claiming Price) $4000

From HRV's integrity department:

BAN ON ROLLING POLE BURR
Harness Racing Victoria has been advised by Harness Racing Australia (HRA) that it has been determined, following a national review involving stewards from all six states, that the following item of equipment is to be placed on the banned list.
The item is marketed under several different names, but is commonly described as a rolling pole burr fitted with copper points. This item of equipment has been deemed inappropriate and inconsistent with equine welfare standards of the Australian harness racing industry.
The banning of this item of equipment took effect as of January 27, 2026 and a link to the full HRA article can be found here.
HRV Stewards remind all participants of the provisions of Australian Harness Racing Rule (AHRR) 213, which reads:
AHRR 213. A person shall not:
(a) by use of harness, gear, equipment, device, substance or any other thing inflict suffering on a horse;
(b) have in his possession any harness, gear, equipment, device, substance or any other thing capable of inflicting suffering on a horse.
All trainers are also reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure that any item fitted to a horse, including newly purchased items, is not capable of causing suffering.

PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS REMINDER
Harness Racing Victoria understands that licensed participants may be required to consume prescribed medication to treat an illness, condition or ailment, which may contain a specified banned substance(s) under the Australian Harness Racing Rules (AHRR).
As such, HRV Stewards remind all licensed participants that it is a requirement under AHRR 252B and 252BB that an application must be made to HRV Stewards for permission to perform licensed activities with a specified banned substance (prescribed medication) in their system.
In addition, any application for exemption to consume such prescribed medication is renewed on each occasion on which participants apply for the renewal of their licence.

ONGOING MEDICAL AND BETTING DECLARATION OBLIGATIONS
Harness Racing Victoria Stewards remind all licensed participants that, in addition to the requirements set out in the HRV Licensing and Registration Policy, participants who hold a driver's licence in any category must, in each licence renewal period, provide a compulsory Drivers Medical Examination form completed by a medical practitioner.
In addition, all licensed drivers are also reminded of their ongoing obligation under the Australian Harness Racing Rules (AHRR) that HRV shall be immediately notified of any change that occurs within a licensing period with respect to any medical condition after a Drivers Medical Examination form has been submitted.
In addition, all licensed participants who are required to provide a compulsory Betting Account Declaration form, such declaration also includes an acknowledgement to immediately make and submit a further declaration if a participant opens a new betting account in their name after submitting a betting declaration. This acknowledgement also includes an understanding that if a participant fails to update (by way of providing a further declaration as soon as practicable) any changes to the information provided in a betting declaration, it may result in action being taken against them under the AHRR.
