Like everyone, Reagan Clarke enjoys winning, but her latest victory had a touch more satisfaction, relief and joy than usual.
Making the trip to Melton last Friday night, Clarke guided Soho Amaryllis to glory in a Vicbred Super Series Bronze Pace.
Prepared by Clarke’s father, Stephen, Soho Amaryllis outstayed her rivals by racing in the “death seat” on her way to a 1:58 triumph as Eagleye and Broadway Obsession filled the placings.
While the performance appeared to be a run-of-the-mill win to the casual observer, it was Clarke’s first success since returning from a serious stable accident.
On June 22, Clarke was heading out to the training track when her horse took fright before catapulting the concession driver out of the sulky.
Instantly in pain, Clarke was rushed to hospital where she was diagnosed with a displaced fracture of the S3 vertebra.
“He cut the corner going out the shed and collected a wheelbarrow on the way through,” Clarke said. “He got a fright and the end result was me being tipped out of the cart and hitting the ground hard.
“Initially the doctor was worried I may require surgery, but a specialist said it was in the right place to be protected and just needed time to heal.
“I was out of action for nearly two months and was going insane.
“It is great to be back at the stable and the races and even better getting a win again.”
