SEN Victoria Cup night was full of special stories on Saturday, with a breakthrough Group 1 triumph for Bendigo horsewoman Rebecca Morrissey among the highlights after Ijustcantseeit produced a stunning upset in the Mimosa Homes Victoria Trotters Oaks.
Just when Hallebesofine was being hailed the winner halfway down the home straight, Daryl Douglas and Ijustcantseeit ($41) powered down the outside to grab victory, blousing the $2.30 favourite.
Douglas conceded the winner’s recent form didn’t instil a great deal of confidence.
“She had been just going alright but hadn’t been showing any speed whatsoever, but I said to Bec as we went out that if the right horse turned up, we’ve got a hope,” Douglas said.
“Bec had been working it pretty hard in the heavy shoes just to get it trotting properly, but in the last week she backed right off and did nothing, and it’s paid dividends.
“Don’t worry, this horse is fast, but it hasn’t shown much speed this time in. It’s gone plain for it, but tonight it showed its true colours,” he said.
The win provided part-time driver Douglas with his first Group 1 victory since scoring aboard Revelstoke in the 2022 Vicbred (3YO Trotting Fillies) Final.
Morrissey’s regular stable driver, Michael Bellman, claims credit for the filly’s unusual moniker.
“She was up at the water walkers and I told Mark Enright, who operates it, that this filly will win a Group 1 race one day, and he said, ‘I just can’t see it’,” Bellman said.
“Bec put it in as the sixth name and got it,” he said.
