Ararat Blitz signals bright future for A-Mac’s juvenile

He’s got a long way to go before he can be compared to his older sibling, but Major Blitz is heading in the right direction.

That’s the call from trainer Allan McDonough following Major Blitz’s win in Ararat on Monday.

By Art Major, the two-year-old is from former handy mare Blitzsuzy, making him a half-brother to Group Two winner, Blitzern.

While prepared by McDonough, Blitzern registered 16 wins and 11 placings from 51 starts, with his victories including the Group Two Golden Apple Final in Launceston.

The gelding was also runner-up in the 2021 Victoria Derby.

As for Major Blitz, he’s built an impressive tally of three wins and a second from six starts.

Driven by McDonough, Major Blitz was caught wide from the outside of the second row before being sent forward to test the leader, Captain Wilson, from the death seat.

Forging his way to the front turning for home, the colt completed a metre-and-a-half metre win from We Favour Rosie.

Ruby Wingate was a head away third in 1:58 over 1790 metres.

“He’s a nice two-year-old,” McDonough said. “I’d say he is as good as Blitzern at the same stage of their careers.

“Hopefully he can go on as well as Blitzern in the long term.

“The Vicbred heats are coming up, so that will be his next start.”
