Top Victorian trainer Andy Gath will be part of the Brisbane Inter Dominion, it’s just a matter of how strongly he attacks it.
The burning question is whether his long-sidelined star Callmethebreeze will take his spot in the trotting series.
The former French trotter, who boasts almost $1.8 million in earnings and beat Just Believe in last year’s Great Southern Star, has only raced four times in the past year and not since galloping when 10th in the Group 1 Bill Collins Sprint at Melton on October 12.
Callmethebreeze’s hoof issues have been well documented, but Gath is confident they are now history.
“It’s been another couple of recent little setbacks which have stopped him being back at the races now. They’ve put him about a month behind,” Gath said.
“If the trials had been at Melton this week, he’d have been there, but we didn’t want to take him to Geelong.
“He’ll trial at Melton next Tuesday and that will give us a much clearer picture on things.
“The plan is for him to go to Brisbane, but he’ll have to show us he’s ready and going well enough.”
Such is the respect for Callmethebreeze, he is still very high up in Inter Dominion markets at $6 for the $500,000 trotting final on July 19 at Albion Park.
“We’re feeling better about things this week,” Gath said. “His work yesterday (Monday) was his best since he was last racing.
“We’ll use next week’s trial as a guide whether he’s ready to go straight to the races or whether he’ll need another trial.
“There’s no doubting how good he is when he’s right, his last win was sitting outside Arcee Phoenix and beating him easily in track record time at Kilmore.”
Gath said his reigning Great Southern Star winner Watts Up Partytime was also still in the Inter Dominion mix.
Watts Up Partytime will chase his third successive win and his fourth from his past six starts in the Hip Pocket Castlemaine Trotters’ free-for-all (1720m) at Melton on Saturday night.
“He’s going really well, but I’m just mindful he loves the sprint trips and the Inter Dominion final is 3157m metres, which will be a long way for him,” he said.
Gath said his eight-time Group 1 winner Catch A Wave would headline “two or three” pacers he will take north for the pacing series.
“Hector will go as well and there’s a chance we’ll take Tango Tara as well,” he said.
“Catch A Wave is back in work and about two weeks off a trial. We’ll be happy just getting one run into him before the first round of (Inter Dominion) heats (on July 5).”
Catch A Wave, who boasts 26 wins from 54 starts and earnings of over $2.2 million, has been freshened since a three-race Perth trip which culminated with his fourth placing in the Group 1 Fremantle Cup on May 2.
