Bronte Nieuwenburg has outlined her selections and suggested game plan for Thursday's seven-race card at Ballarat.
R1 – 6.33pm – VHRC/ Australian Pacing Gold Pace – 2200m
1 – Royal Saxon
2 – Alanna Miki
9 – Major Bert
5 – Montana Pride
R2 – 7.00pm – VHRC / Aldebaran Park Trot – 2200m
1 – Hillwinsome
4 – Coconut Mickey
3 – El Bravo
7 – The Dark Thunder
Hillwinsome has significantly better sectional times than the rest of the field. Coconut Mickey and Midnight Muscle do have better gate speed than him, so he may get crossed early. However, if he can trot throughout, he should still be too good.
BACK: 1 Hillwinsome – 2 Units (win)
R3 – 7.28pm – VHRC / Benstud Pace – 1710m
9 – Metro Memory
3 – Tophut Johny
7 – Best Back Bruce
8 – Precious Belle
Metro Memory has a good barrier here, second horse on the back row, and will be following out Tophut Johny, who has great gate speed. He’s likely to get into a good striking position over the short trip, and he’s racing well enough to win.
BACK: 9 Metro Memory – 2 Units (win)
R4 – 7.58pm – VHRC / Renown Silverware Pace – 2200m
5 – Nothing Sweeter
7 – Muselet
8 – Alook To Like
2 – Quick Decision
This looks like a very even field however, I am happy to stick with Nothing Sweeter. This well-bred daughter of Sweet Lou is first-up, but she was racing well at the end of last year. Victoria’s leading driver, James Herbertson, takes the reins on this mare for the first time tonight, and if she doesn’t have to race too tough, she should be right in the finish.
BACK: 5 Nothing Sweeter – 2 Units (win)
R5 – 8.28pm – VHRC / Gbl Properties Pace – 2200m
8 – Oscar Bravo
4 – Blue Ocean
9 – Lester
3 – El Awoman
R6 – 9.05pm – VHRC / Rich River Golf Club 3yo & Older Maiden Pace – 1710m
1 – Catherine
5 – Mighty Bling
4 – American Victory
2 – Ynobe Majak
The Geoff Webster-trained runners are racing very well at the moment, and Catherine looks like a talented filly who is still learning what racing is all about. Last start, she was good but had to come wide and make up too much ground. She won’t need to race wide here from barrier one and has options with the small field. I think she can take the next step and breakthrough for her maiden victory here.
BACK: 1 Catherine – 2 Units (win)
R7 – 9.40pm – VHRC / Mark Gurry & Associates 3yo & Older Maiden Pace – 1710m
2 – Divine Tilly
7 – Platinums Boy
1 – Quick Crunch
4 – Sir Nippa
The Steve Cleave-prepared Divine Tilly impressed me before she even started racing, just based on her young trial form. She has now had three starts—one race can be forgiven, and in the other two, she was very good. In her most recent run, she was electric to the line. Her own times have been fantastic. She should be winning here.
BACK: 2 Divine Tilly – 2 Units (win)

** A betting unit is typically a percentage of the total bankroll or the amount of money you are willing to risk on a particular bet – for example 1 unit is 10% of your bankroll, therefore with a $100 bankroll 1 unit equals $10.
