Tim O'Connor has done the form for Saturday night's Hunter Cup/Great Southern Star meeting at Melton.

R1 – 6.04pm – HERTZ MELTON PACE – 2240m

3 – Telemachus

5 – Hezasweetie

2 – Hugo Maguire

8 – Jazzy Malea

Had some joy with Telemachus when he ran a place at huge odds last time out and I fancy getting involved with him again here. He has good gate speed and is in good form. Wouldn’t shock in a race with plenty of hopes.

BACK: 3 Telemachus 0.5 (win)/1.5 unit (place)

R2 – 6.30pm – YABBY DAM FARMS GREAT SOUTHERN STAR (1ST HEAT) – 1720m

1 – The Locomotive

3 – Arcee Phoenix

5 – Oscar Bonavena

8 – Aldebaran Zeus

R3 – 7.07pm – YABBY DAM FARMS GREAT SOUTHERN STAR (2ND HEAT) – 1720m

10 – Keayang Chucky

6 – Queen Elida

4 – Mufasa Metro

9 – Aroha Koe

R4 – 7.37pm – HIP POCKET CASTLEMAINE 4YO BONANZA (GROUP 3) – 1720m

4 – Bay Of Biscay

7 – Some American

1 – Miki To Success

8 – Kingman

R5 – 8.06pm – THE BETAVET PURE STEEL – 2240m

5 – Exotic Bushranger

4 – Rocknroll Walla

13 – Tango Tara

8 – Captain Hammerhead

Great race with plenty of winning chances and fancy Rocknroll Walla is over the odds. He’s really stepping it up of late and is some chance of finding the pegs with his good gate speed. If he does, he can certainly figure.

BACK: 4 – Rocknroll Walla 0.5 unit (each-way)

R6 – 8.43pm – SPORTSBET A G HUNTER CUP (GROUP 1) – 2760m

1 – Republican Party

11 – Swayzee

8 – Leap To Fame

2 – Tact Mcleod

One of the all-time races here and I’m leaning towards the Kiwi Republican Party, largely based off his exceptional third to Swayzee in the NZ Cup during November. He was way back in the field there and closed hard to run a drum. He then won two Group 1 events over the longer trip and was good last weekend in a fast-run Casey Classic. He draws for a cosy trip on the pegs in a race that’ll surely result in a hot tempo. He might just be in the right spot to pounce late.

BACK: 1 Republican Party – 1 unit (win)/2 units (place)

R7 – 9.13pm – ALABAR FARMS LADYSHIP CUP (GROUP 3) – 1720m

3 – Sweetnikkilou

2 – Eye Keep Smiling

7 – Aardies Express

5 – My Moonlite Dream

Sweetnikkilou is quickly becoming one of my favourite pacers, with her last-start win simply brilliant. She’s no moral in a race jam-packed with top-end talent, but I’ve got to back her at the price. A star on the rise.

BACK: 3 Sweetnikkilou – 1 unit (win)

R8 – 9.46pm – YABBY DAM FARMS GREAT SOUTHERN STAR FINAL (GROUP 1) – 1720m

Arcee Phoenix to win on the all-in market.

R9 – 10.18pm – CATANACH'S JEWELLERS MERCURY 80 PACE (LISTED CLASSIC) – 1200m

10 – Catch A Wave

6 – Rocknroll Hammer

4 – Diamond Eclipse

7 – Ghost Of Time

Catch A Wave is one of the country’s best pacers when he’s on song and I think he will prove too good despite the bad barrier. His turn of foot to win a recent trial was sensational and he should get this done.

BACK: 10 Catch A Wave – 3 units (win)

R10 – 10.52pm – GARRARDS HORSE & HOUND 3YO GOLD CHALICE – 2240m

6 – Soho Americano

4 – Ill Be Gone

7 – Galaxy Lass

2 – Samkerr

QUADDIE ($100,000 jackpot and $500,000 projected pool)

RACES 4-7

1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9/5, 8, 11, 12, 13/1, 8, 11/2, 3, 7

** A betting unit is typically a percentage of the total bankroll or the amount of money you are willing to risk on a particular bet – for example 1 unit is 10% of your bankroll, therefore with a $100 bankroll 1 unit equals $10.
