GOODFORM – Ryan’s tips for a monster card at Maryborough

Ryan Phelan has your tips and Quaddies for a huge 10-race card at Maryborough.

Race 1:

OVERVIEW: GAELIC LADY (7) turned in an impressive debut displaying good manners, gate speed and won with plenty in hand by a big margin. Granted, the time wasn’t overly quick, opposition wasn’t strong and they did things wrong, but she looked to have decent ability for this level. She can afford to be assertively driven again over the short trip, and a repeat of last time is good enough to beat these.

MINNIE MIA (4) has good gate speed and is likely to cross to the pegs first here to get the right trip. Even though her form doesn’t look flash, she’s down slightly in class and competitive at this level. SHINELIKETHESUN (8) has displayed ability throughout her 16 starts but has been her own worst enemy on occasions with her manners letting her down. If she does everything right expect her to be in the finish. THE TROUT COD (2) was able to get her maiden last time over the long trip where she was able to be driven cold and won easily in slow time. That effort seemed to contrast with what she had done previously but is worth consideration with a similar trajectory. WIND STORM (5) is first up of a trial win, and any market moves should be respected also.

BACK: GAELIC LADY (7) – 2 units (win)

SELECTIONS: GAELIC LADY (7), MINNIE MIA (4), SHINELIKETHESUN (8), THE TROUT COD (2)

Race 2:

OVERVIEW: GLORIFIED (7) resumes here off a solid 2yo campaign which yielded a win and competed in the Nutrien series before going out for a solid break. He’s had plenty of time at the trials in preparation for this, and most recently won here in decent time. If he’s forward enough and brings his manners, he has the quality to beat these.

BIG RAIN (6) is fast beginner evidenced by her all the way win three back where she was able to dictate and win in slow time. If she gets the right map, she’s in the mix. CARTALCHA (4) has had her chances recently, but this race presents as a favourable opportunity to improve on her from the positive gate. FIRST IN FLIGHT (9) won on debut coming from near last in a slow last half, but she displayed nice balance in her action, and should be finding the line well again, but her chances are tempo related. FRANCO AMERICANO (5) hasn’t been trotting that well his past two back from a break, but he did display ability last preparation, so with more fitness now could be open to improvement. SABIHALIL (1) and MAORIS AVENGER (3) tend to do everything right and may map well to have claims at the minor end.

SELECTIONS: GLORIFIED (7), BIG RAIN (6), CARTALCHA (4), FIRST IN FLIGHT (9)

Race 3:

OVERVIEW: WEDGE TAIL EAGLE (5) is getting close to breaking his maiden on the back of three solid runs this campaign the most recent where he narrowly missed to a horse who’ s been racing in solid form. He doesn’t seem against working in his races, so the sticky map may not be a disadvantage to get a forward spot of what will likely be a slow tempo.

OVER HERE (9) has a solid SP profile and could potentially map well here despite the trailing draw. He was below par when favourite last time, but his runs prior suggest there’s talent if he gets the right trip. SYNTAX ERROR (3) was driven cold and came with a nice finish in a slow last half last time out. She’s been thrown in the deep end a few times and this lineup look more suitable. LEZAMA (1) has good early gate speed and looks the most likely leader and if she gets a soft enough run up front can be in the finish.

SELECTIONS: WEDGE TAIL EAGLE (5), OVER HERE (9), SYNTAX ERROR (3), LEZAMA (1)

Race 4:

OVERVIEW: FRANKS ALOT (5) was quite good on debut forced to sit parked outside the winner who’s racing well, and they ran decent time for this class. He should be improved by that outing and may map reasonably well with speed inside and out. This stable seems to strike well with their young trotters and looks the testing material.

ELARIA (2) creates plenty of interest as a first-starting 3yo filly who was prepped up in Sydney before switching to the Cotchin barn. She had one trial locally where she seemed ok, without it being a dazzling outing. Herbertson going on is a massive advantage to give her every chance. WALKING ON WATER (4) is a 15-start maiden but she’s getting closer to a win after 3 solid 2nds in her past 4 starts. She has gate speed to put herself at the top end and Bellman seems to get on well with her. UNCLE BILL (1) has good early gate speed which has helped him in nabbing a couple of placings in his 3 starts. He was quite plain last time when he had every hope, but these conditions suit. DANCE WITH ROXY (6) is going quite well her past couple and does have gate speed, but whether she can cross to the pegs is problematic. COLLEAGUES (11) seems to have ability but isn’t trotting reliably but is worth keeping safe in case he puts it together.

SELECTIONS: FRANKS ALOT (5), ELARIA (2), WALKING ON WATER (4), DANCE WITH ROXY (6)

Race 5:

OVERVIEW: BETSY ANNE (7) has been costly lately, going down as favourite in 3 of her last four starts, but she just keeps striking races like this where it feels challenging to be confident of tipping anything to beat her. She’s drawn wide, but her pattern is to race forward, and Herbertson is always a massive plus in these types of races.

CASTLES IN THE SKY (9) can be hard to catch and was beaten a long way when in the market last time but was solid the run prior. She’s normally best off the front row, but this race isn’t strong. LAVENGERS BOY (4) was a winner here back in June but hasn’t been able to deliver a similar performance since. This is easiest race he’s been in for a while so is open to improvement. TENSION SEEKER (2) is a quick beginner and will look for the top over this trip. She does come back in class, but she’s come up empty-handed for a win in 44 starts at this track. It’s an impossible race to be confident with so throw in AZALEA MAE (1), MISS AVENGER (4) and ALLAWART BOB (8) if you want a bit of extra insurance for wider exotics.

SELECTIONS: BETSY ANNE (7), CASTLES IN THE SKY (9), LAVENGERS BOY (4), TENSION SEEKER (2)

Race 6:

OVERVIEW: FLING IT RAINBOW (5) is a speedy beginner who will look for the top here at a track he has a liking and a distance he enjoys. He’s been racing consistently lately and was a winner over similar distance five back after getting a good run in transit. He will be map dependant but is a likeable option in an open race.

KYVALLEY MISTY (8) has a strong trainer/driver combo but is awkwardly drawn off the back row. She has more ability than most in this, and although she needs luck, with clear running will be strong late. CHARLIE WALKER (2) is another speedy beginner who will likely get to the pegs first and has options thereafter. He’s enjoying a decent season at this level and does boast a solid record at this track and distance. MONEY TALKS (6) often has the flashing light on him, hence a solid SP profile, but his lack of gate speed means he’s often giving them a start. SONNYBOY (3) and MI BOW (10) have claims at the minor end.

SELECTIONS: FLING IT RAINBOW (5), KYVALLEY MISTY (8), CHARLIE WALKER (2), MONEY TALKS (6)

Race 7:

OVERVIEW: REVERAND BOB (5) drops back sharply in grade here after racing well against the best in his age group in the Vicbred and Need For Speed series. He was a good winner two back at Melton and the form out of that race has stood up ok. He can press forward from this draw, and whilst there’s a bit of speed to his inside, he still should map ok. Herbertson and Chircop enjoy a great strike rate together and this race looks most suitable to win again.

TRUSCOTTS ELEGANCE (4) is another who comes out of strong age group company, where she ran a good race to finish 4th in the Trotters Oaks. Before that she wasn’t running well in strong races from tricky draws. Her last win was at this track at decent odds, but the horses she defeated have raced well since. She appears the main danger. I CHOOSE YOU (7) has a tricky draw to overcome but did win four back in nice fashion and then took on some smarter ones in the Vicbred series. He was a forgive last time after breaking early when inconvenienced by another runner. JILLIBY RADIANCE (10) comes through a G1 also and she did things wrong there. She was a winner the start prior when leading and beating Truscotts Elegance but now has a tricky draw to overcome. OMNIA (2) is an interesting type who had nice Adelaide form and at her first start for the new camp somehow led from the backrow but knocked up over the last 200m. She may benefit from that outing and is worth keeping safe.

BACK: REVERAND BOB (5) – 3 units (win)

SELECTIONS: REVERAND BOB (5), TRUSCOTTS ELEGANCE (4), I CHOOSE YOU (7), JILLIBY RADIANCE (10)

Race 8:

OVERVIEW: Standing start for the trotters over the middle trip. ROMANTIC NINA (4) is perhaps better under mobile conditions, but if she begins safely her form stacks up well in this lineup. She was a winner at Melton in a slightly easier race two back, and last time she did it tough outside the speed and just as she was ready to strike, broke in running. If she happened to find the top end she would take plenty of catching.

OFF YOUR FACESKI (10) won the Swan Hill Trotters Cup last start from the same handicap, albeit over the longer trip. He gave them a whipping there winning by a space at big odds, and does have a good record under the stand, even though he’s not foolproof away. AVANT GUARD (8) is yet to win under the standing start conditions but does meet some of these from a better handicap, so he could be open to sharp improvement. PARIS KAY (6) is adept in most conditions, and although she runs her best races up on the speed, with a safe beginning can get in front of some key rivals. JAYS ALL THAT (5) is going ok but would need to race near the front to be a hope and CHAMPAGNE CHARLEY (9) was a winner last time but that was from the front row.

SELECTIONS: ROMANTIC NINA (4), OFF YOUR FACESKI (10), AVANT GUARD (8), PARIS KAY (6)

Race 9:

OVERVIEW: QUAKE PROOF (1) is first up from a break here and finds himself in the rare situation where he’s drawn to map well and use his strong finish. He’s been racing up in grade and going well from tough set-ups and despite giving away a fitness edge, the short trip and chance to come with one run appeals at likely value.

KISS AT MIDNIGHT (6) is a very fast beginner and is also first up here, suited by the likely map and short distance. He was a good trial winner recently at Melton, and with Alford aboard she will get every chance. KAMARAN (2) has ability and returns to the front row after not having much luck his past few. The draw helps his chances, although he’s come up empty handed at nine attempts at this track. MAJESTIC CHARMA (4) has been going well in slightly easier company than this and has shown versatility in those runs. There’s a few better but she’s in the mix. NO TELLING HEATHER (9) has been going well in easier company and from better set ups, but she’s honest enough to include in calculations.

BACK: QUAKE PROOF (1) – 1.5 units (win)

SELECTIONS: QUAKE PROOF (1), KISS AT MIDNIGHT (6), KAMARAN (2), NO TELLING HEATHER (9)

Race 10:

OVERVIEW: AT THE DISTANCE (2) looks well served by the inside draw to be driven hard to hold the lead over the short trip. He’s been racing well in somewhat more challenging set ups, and the last time he was able to find the front five runs back at Melton he was a comfortable winner, and this race looks ideal to go all the way.

NEDZA THRILLER (10) has accounted for some of these recently from front row draws, and the back row makes his task more challenging this time, but he must be respected. ATTRACTED (8) if the map works out as expected can catch leaders back here and was close in a decent race from that position last time. SNICKERS EXPRESS (9) is often popular with punters at this level and has placed 10 from 22 this season but is still chasing that elusive victory. ALDEBARAN MARCUS (4), BUCKLES FOR BERRY (5) and CONNIES PRESIDENT (11) all have claims at the minor end of the prize.

BACK: AT THE DISTANCE (2) – 3.5 units (win)

SELECTIONS: AT THE DISTANCE (2), NEDZA THRILLER (10), ATTRACTED (8), SNICKERS EXPRESS (9)

A betting unit is typically a percentage of the total bankroll or the amount of money you are willing to risk on a particular bet – for example, 1 unit is 10% of your bankroll; therefore, with a $100 bankroll, 1 unit equals $10.
