Emotion boiled over for James Herbertson at start 1585 when the 19-year-old reinsman served up a hearty victory salute upon capturing his first Group 1 win.

Savannah Jay Jay led all the way to win Saturday night's Schweppes Australasian Trotting Championship for trainer Stan Cameron and Herbertson, finding the front from the standing start and producing an all-the-way win.

"It's a great feeling," Herbertson told TrotsVision post-race. "I was getting a bit teary around the side but I've cleaned up now. I just can't thank Stan enough for the opportunity."

It was also a landmark result for Cameron, delivering the the 73-year-old's first Group 1 breakthrough, a significant feat for someone who's been "mucking around" in the sport since the 1970s.

All went largely to script for the team in Saturday's $50,000 hit-out, benefitting when polemarker McLovin initially miss-stepped to advance to the front and from their Herbertson controlled the race without great heat, with rivals McLovin, Red Hot Tooth and Kyvalley Blur stacked along the pegs for much of the race.

A 28.9-second quarter and 29.7-second third quarter kept the running and three-wide lines honest and Savannah Jay Jay got home in 27.9 to hold off Red Hot Tooth's sprint lane surge and McLovin's late three-wide advance.

"This horse, he's typically a sit-sprinter but I had to drive him tough tonight," Herbertson said. "Up the straight I was a little bit worried but he just kept on fighting and he wouldn't let them pass him.

"He was quite fresh tonight and Stan said he would be. It took a bit to get him to come back to me, but it was good we didn't have anyone up pressuring us. It's a long way for a horse that's typically a sit-sprinter, so all credit to the horse."
