Group 1-winning filly ready to fly after injury lay-off

Mick Stanley was rapt with the racetrack returns of three top stable performers at Stawell on Monday and is hoping the run will continue with one of his brightest talents this Saturday night.

Drain The Swamp, Let It Linga and Soho Dow Jones all won first-up for the Burrumbeet trainer-driver early this week and attention now turns to Group 1-winning two-year-old Soho Almasi, who is poised to make her comeback from injury at Tabcorp Park Melton.

The daughter of Mach Three will have her first start since May 2021 when she lines up in the weekend’s The Big Screen Company Pace.

Stanley said Soho Almasi had been suffering from POD lesions in her hind ankles, a problem he described as a form of bone bruising.

“It wasn’t until we put her through the MRI that we found it. X-rays weren’t picking it up because it was bruising and not fractures,” Stanley said.

“It didn’t need surgery or anything of the like, they just told me to give her a good three-month spell, let her mature and let the bones strengthen up and what have you.

“We got her back in and we haven’t had her back through the scanner as yet, but she hasn’t shown any signs that we’ve had to check her out.

“It’s been a good preparation so far, she hasn’t shown any kinds of soreness… Not just in her trackwork but in the trial (Melton, March 8) as well, she’s got her speed back which is what she lost.

“She’s the one in the stable at the moment that I’m really looking forward to getting back to the races…”

Soho Almasi, who is raced by Rob Watson, won the Group 1 NSWBC 2YO Fillies Final during an interstate campaign with Craig Cross in 2020 and has not been seen at the races since a ninth placing in the APG 3YO Fillies Final in May 2021.

She’s a winner of seven races from 15 starts and more than $140,000 in prizemoney.
